Title: Things I like and dislike about the products on my bike, new thing added daily.
Post by: Gunz on December 10, 2011, 03:23:19 PM
As we all know, I've dumped around $50,000-$60,000 in my personal raptor and another $25,000 in my other raptors. I think I've earned the right as a consumer to have an opinion on the products, builders, and resources offered to us on a daily basis. With that said, I'm gonna add a product or service every day or so that I have had the privilege to use and offer my opinion on it, take it for what its worth, either it be shit or gold. If I haven't giving a description to a product that you are in the market for, please feel free to ask... there is a good chance that I have used the product you are in the market for.

My build (http://"http://www.raptorsource.com/forum/index.php?topic=7906.0")

Swinger: Stock swingarm modified by dpe_ele

Known fact, I've got over 70hp... so I've been rocking a +4 swinger. I had dpe_ele build me a +2 modified stock swinger, one of the best mods ever. By going from a +4 to +2 I've gained some cornering back. Also by going with a cast aluminum swinger vs an aftermarket I dropped a noticeable amount of weight. A modified stock swinger FTMFW win! I've broke several aftermarkets and there is no way in hell I will ever by an aftermarket swinger again. Dpe_ele made me a superior product, props to him.

i think there is a fine balance between giving a review on a product that didnt fit or function as antisipated or totally Blasting it if you have frustrations with its use or install

I recently replaced my ASV levers to ASV shorty levers, for me I think it was a big mistake to go with shorty's. I have man hands and for some reason I could not get a grip with the shorty's. I have since reverted back to the longer ASV's. I have owned 5 pairs and have yet to break any of them. I have broke plenty of OEM and aftermarket levers.

Shortys ASV

Now Kenz and Brit have Shorty ASV's on their Raptor's neither of them have any complaints, then again Kenz is 10 and Brits hands aren't much bigger then his. I also like the clutch adjustment on their shortys, my regular ASV's don't have this option... I wish they did. My opinions on ASV are they are a must have lever. Shortys for the kids and chicks, regulars for the Men.

the pro-pack comes with the upgraded quick adjuster and a much nicer perch think they are C-5's

Personally never been a fan of the shorties either as you dont have as much control with them, and pulling a heavier clutch then stock becomes a hassle

Even with DL's springs and 5 washers underneigth of those I still use 2 fingers to shift and brake. I pretty much leave my fingers on the levers at all times. With the OEM levers I have no complaints.

Faast Flexx bars..... If you don't own a set, you are losing out. I have purchased 4 pairs so far. Every quad I buy will recieve a pair. These bars are awesome! I even put a set on my 10yr olds bike. $350 is a bit excessive, but once you buy a set you won't regret it. Arm pump is a thing of the past with these.

I'll tell you what, If I can get 50 "Im in's" on a monthly give away, I'll give a brand new set away, but only if I can get the winning person to give a complete write up on them.

Preddy installed a CCP puckstyle stabilizer on the new build. As far as looks it's a 10, totally cool looking. The function is absolutely no better then the stickstyle stabilizers I have used in the past. So considering the cost over a stickstyle stabilizer I give it a 2. There is virtually know way easy to adjust the controls on the CCP. I have to get off the bike and nearly lay down to adjust it, I hate that. I give that a 1 out of 10 for super difficulty to adjust and lack of adjustment on the fly. The cost of the CCP was under $300, for puckstyle prices I consider that relevantly cheap, that's a 10 out of 10. I've owned several stick style stabilizers and in my experience they are all I need in a stabilizer, I'm not sold on the puckstyle, nor am I sold on the CCP. Brits bike has a Jensen stickstyle stabilizer and does exactly the same in performance, plus she can adjust hers while she's riding, simply by leaning over the bars. The cost was $100+ cheaper then mine too. I know what you're thinking, adjust it once and ride..... well NO, as fatigue starts setting in or the terrain conditions change so does the need for the setting control. I just bought a stickstyle for my son, easier on him to adjust it verses trying to stick his arm in the motor/frame area. My opinion, CCP puckstyle stabilizer is a no go for my application. I miss my $100 stickstyle stabilizer, it was as good and way easier to adjust.

Side note: If you don't have a stabilizer, you're missing out.

nice review, Mike. Kinda how I feel about it...for double the price, it should work twice as good.

Itll last 3x as long as a stick without rebuild. Had mine since 2008,.two wrecked front end later, still works perfect

The stick that Preddy took off of my bike, needed to be rebuilt but it lasted 7years and 2 bikes before it blew aaaand it only cost $12 to rebuild..

Also by your calculations
3x as long

3yrs for $300 puck style, inconvenient.
1yr for $100 stickstyle, convenient.
Same price assuming the stick style goes out 3x before the puckstyle. If the stickstyle lasts as long as the puckstyle and they do by the way, then you're saving money. I've never met anybody that has personally had a puckstyle go out, then again nobody I ride with has one. I've only seen one stickstyle go out(mine), and I ride with plenty of guys that have them. Aaron how many stickstyles have you used? BTW, my Gixxer came with a OEM stickstyle stabilizer. Just say'n.

I'll take convenience......And my puck works perfect too, I just don't like it. I'll try a GPR and see what happens

I LIKE the height of aftermarket stems +2 or +1+1 for me because of how tall I am. It makes stand up riding a lot easier on my back and i feel more in control with proper height bars while jumping. But, I DISLIKE how easy these damn things bend, I mean serisouly im getting ready to be on my third LSR.

some one needs to come up with some sort of a more forgiving mount?

or maybe a stronger stem material with the addition steering hoop gussets? (I KNOW STEMS ARE MADE OF WEAKER MATERIAL SO THEY DONT BEND THE FRAME)

only other thing I can think of is to stock pile stockers and get some nice risers....... :(

Gunz, I think the only thing I can agree with is how difficult it is to adjust the stabilizer.

As for the rest of your complaints I think there's some good reasons behind it. I've gone from a PEP's stabilizer to a CCP to a Precision. IMO I noticed zero difference between the CCP and the Precision. I couldnt wait to get the PEPs stick off my bike. Maybe I got a bad one, but I couldnt stand the thing.

Only thing I can think of is that your bike now is setup for alot faster turning and suspension characteristics. Your old Mohawks didnt turn to save its life. The new tires and alingment have quite a bit to do with it IMO. On my precision I just found a happy medium and left it alone. Every so often when the dunes are REALLY choppy I might turn it up a little.

I found the CCP was easier to tune than the precision is. And I agree with preddy that there's not a major difference to the casual rider between a CCP and Precision to be worth the 4-550 dollar cost. I got mine used for 250 so it was worth the shot...I plan on getting another CCP for my other quad and would recommend it any day over a precision unless you just want to spend the money. you do get what you pay for.

Adjustment wise, I just find the roughest trails and tune my stabilizer to that condition, and it's good for most any condition after that.

I've read a lot of posts bashing stick style stabilizers in the past.  Usually people call them garbage & a waste of money.  So I bought a Precision & luv it. I caught a tree root & mangled my rim when I was testing my Precision & it spared me a sprained wrist or worse. Worth the money? Hell yeah.  To each his own

GPR IV, adjusts on the handlebar. Mid race at the GNCC I was getting tired of fighting the stabilizer so I just turned the knob mid ride. Love that thing soooooo much. Now comes in a variety of colors!

Extended stock swingarm - mine is a +4, done thru KingofBling a few years ago in an MR group buy. Love it for the dunes, but perhaps a bit long for the tighter trails. Originally wanted a +2 or +3. Total steath factor is priceless.

Rox Anti-vibe Risers - have them mounted in conjunction with my Fasst Flexx bars. Great combo. Pretty much eliminates the arm fatique. I will say they do make the steering a little vage at times when they are deflecting.

ASV levers - never had any, seems like a ton of $ for what, a clutch and brake lever. my oem seem to work adequately. where's the benefit?

Fasst Flexx bars - great addition, really helps with arm and shoulder fatique.

CCP steering dampner - ran the stick style, then a CCP, now have the Elka System 5 unit. stick and CCP both added unwanted stiffness and a heavy feel to the steering. my Elka is totally adjustable like the Precision, Ohlins or GPR. being able to eliminate that heavy feel during return to center is priceless. with the cheaper units you know you're running a dampner, with the high end ones you don't even know it's there. well worth the $$ imo.

dunno whats really involved in "tuning" a stabilizer ??? i just turn mine up all the way, beacause it fades as the oil heats up anyway.

CCP only has one adjustment, the Precision has 3 spots for adjustment. You can tell when you start playing around w/ them a bit.

My precision only has 2 dials. One for center and one for sides. I usually leave them both somewhere in the middle, I don't really like it when its set too high seems like it wears you out more than its actually helping.

i run a fast way 5 and it is really nice. came as elka puck style. riding mine and then jumping on a bike with out one the steering is lighter but every pebble i hit i could feel it through the bars. after i first got it i was in 5th when a buggy rut came up. i stiffened up and waited for the worst but all i got was a slight kick in my bars. makes it alot easier to enjoy rides when the dunes are rutted up. well worth the $300 i paid for it. only stick style experience i have is a mx yfz that had two and the resistance back to center turned me off to the stick styles
