Title: Aluminum fuel tank group buy!!!
Post by: richw3533 on June 17, 2008, 11:19:04 AM
If everyone has not had a chance to see the aluminum fuel cell yet, check out the thread about the one I made for my R1 project. If you have seen it already, then you had a look at what the regular aluminum fuel cell is going to look like for the raptor 700.

The new tank will hold 4 gallons of fuel in it with the pump in.  If you want the 5 gallon tank it will require the use of the external pump and eliminate the internal pump.  This tank does fit under the stock plastics and does not require to change any other part of the bike such as steering stem.  If you buy the 4 gallon tank and use the stock fuel pump, yes the fuel light still works.  If you buy the 5 gallon tank, we are working on the fuel light situation.

I met with the machine shop that is going to be making my filler necks that are to be welded to the tank to take place for the stock filler cap. I have worked out a deal to have them cut 45 of them. Here is the problem though. If I only have him make up to 5 of them the cost will make the sale of the tank $575 + shipping. If I can get enough orders to cover at least 35 of them, then I will be able to cover the cost for the last 10. If I can also get the first 35 sold then the cost for them will only be $500 + shipping. Any thing over the 35, the cost drops to $450 + shipping. The welding shop said if I can sell 60 or more of them the cost will go to $400 + shipping.

I will make three to start with. One for my red raptor, and the other two will go to two certain individuals for testing and reviews. All of the pictures and reviews will be posted for all to see.

So here is what I propose, I had two thoughts on this.

1. Do a group buy and make the list for 35 tanks, that way we can get the cost down from get go. I will put this same thread in all five of the forums. This way we can hope to get them filled right away. So if I do a group buy the price will be $500 +shipping. If the list goes over and the price drops, if you paid more than $450 you will be reimbursed the $50 unless you want it put towards the shipping.

2. Do a list and you pay what you pay. If you are the first on the list you pay $575 + shipping, and if you are the 36th on the list you pay $450 + shipping.

Me personally, I would like to do a group by of 45, get the cost down and we all get great tanks cheaper.

There will be a $200 deposit for the tanks. This is mandated by the welder so he can order in supplies. Forms of payment that are excepted will be paypal(you also pay fees), money order, and bank check. We might even be able to use credit cards if there is enough guys.

I will start taking names for tanks right now, but I will not be taking deposits until Friday June 20th. If you would like to pay in full you can

For those who do not usually buy after market parts like this, this pricing is for the tank only.  If you would like a complete setup, I will accommodate those orders but you will have to pay for the added parts and labor that are required.

I don't know off hand, but what is the current capacity of the stock tank?

And I'm pretty sure 4 Gallons is a lot more than stock. ;)

OK I feel totaly humiliated by being listed as that other forum!!! I found the larger fuel tank thread over there 6 months ago. I did not even know there were raptor web sites at that time. From the other forum i found this one during the migration and have been here since the begining. I am sure the way things are over there I will not renew my RF VIP. So rich please relist me as this forum on the two tanks I want. Thank you, FR.

Repost.
Actually with the gas cap I have on it, it is ment more for racing and not much tipping.
I will explain - the gas cap has a nut inside that you tighten and it seals up the breathing gap.  So if you are just doing racing you leave it loose and if you plan on tipping it up you have to tighten it for right now.  We are actuall going to be installing a breather valve in the tank to compensate for this.

Post by: socalrappy700 on June 18, 2008, 08:30:00 AM
Sweet!  As long as there is a nut you can tighten if you need to tip it for any reason.  Thanks Rich.

Anything wrong with using a statdard gas cap and neck to keep costs down? I would be all over this if I knew I could get it for under 400 all said and done.

Thats worth the price alone.  That cap is hot!

But on a side note I wonder how the bigger tank and more weight would affect the balance and weight distribution of the quad.

I think like any bigger tank (IMS for the 660) you're going to get more top heavy, but the tank is pretty centralized on the 700 so I don't think airing it out would be to bad.

If you read the whole topic it says it comes with the regular filler neck so you can reuse what ever you have for a gas cap.  The one I have on the R1 tank cost $250 just for the cap and it came from overseas.

If I can get enough people to say they want one, I can get the cost down.  In order to get the cost down to $400 for the tank, I would have to have 65 confirmed orders or more.  Then the shops involved would lower the production and material costs.  It is simple math, the more I sell the cheaper they will be.  If I got 100 dedicated orders I could even get the tank down to $350 which if F'ing huge deal on the worth of this tank.

You might gain some top heavyness, but for the 5 gallon tank we have designed it to drop in the front.  That is why it requires the use of an external inline pump.

I was working with the CNC guys and the shop I am going to be mass manufacturing these from today and we should have all of the proper photos and information soon to answer every question that anybody might have.  We are actually looking into having a unvailing of the tank also that we will be inviting all local guys to come if they would like and check out the tank.  I will put up the proper invite when it is scheduled.  As for the list, the people on the list will be the first to get there tanks shipped out.  Then the local guys who show up will get a chance to buy one.  After that it will be a first com first serve basis, unless you have talked with me directly and set up other arrangements.  All dealers and distributors should contact me in advance to place orders.

To be exact, it's 6.34 at 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooler it is, the less dense it is.

No, I just need to know how much stuff weighs when figuring weight and balance before a flight. Exact figures are pretty important.

We will have to fill a tank and weigh it to get exact figures.  Thanks for the weight question, I forgot about full weight.  I was just wanting to get dry weight because we all would realize one point one gallons of gas will weigh more than stock.  The five gallon might be a little heavy for you guys trying to crunch weight numbers on your bikes like doing Jenny Craig.

Here is a great shot showing the plastics fit over the tank.  The only difference is the tanks I am selling will have the regular filler neck.

I wish it wasn't so much but that is with me just getting my money back for each one.

Right now I am paying $85 for each filler neck, $210 in material for the tank, $30 for R&D and set up, and $250 goes to the welder.

I am not making one dime on these tanks, if people don't believe me I can give them the contact info for the shop I am working with to get these built.  That is why I need so many orders because if they are going to make more of them they will mass order the supplies and the costs will drastically go down.

it's to bad they aren't willing to build in mass. They have to know there's a market out there to sell them

I know there'd be plenty to jump on board @ the 350ish range

that's where its "semi-affordable" for the average joe

If I can get a guaranteed sold number and deposits on them I can make it happen and front the money but I need the guarantee of the first 100.  I can sell them for $400 shipped and I can even get fuel pumps soon if I can get them all sold.  I am working out a deal with a fuel pump manufacturer and I could get new fuel pumps for less than $50 a pump.

What is the difference between the tank fillers?  And will the tank cover plastics fit over the other?

That tank filler is specifically for the R1 bike.  The Raptor tanks will have their regular filler necks, so you can use which ever gas cap you have.

I think that's what he's trying to show here.  By the looks of the plastic they don't look pushed out or anything. It looks like the cover will go over just fine.

It shows that it will fit on the side.  The one that goes on the top looks like it may not fit.

Rich chimed out and has not been seen since. Hope the money several of us sent him was put to good use. This was about the time Obama was talking redistribution of wealth.....I guess Rich was way ahead of that game.

Your buying that again Randy    ( T Dub)? How hard is it to tell a friend or family member to make a post explaining things. Especially when you have taken thousands from people. The guy is a crook. I had dealings with him months ago on the phone and it was one lie after another.

I'm not buying anything my friend.....I was just trying to be nice and maybe find out his ebay user name.

I never did any business with him myself, I chose not to after some PM's early on, on RF with him when he first started posting there......... I didn't just fall off the turnip truck  ;)

On the T-Dub deal......I had bought swingarms from him since back in my TRX250R days with not one problem untill about two years ago when he started pissing backwards on things. After that long of myself and friends doing business with him your inclined to develope some trust in a guy...who would have known he'd turn into a common theif and start rippin peeps off, including myself ???

I feel you Randy. I am sick and tired of low lifes taking advantage of people and then sucking up there sympathy with BS excuses. I have never been ripped of directly form them but it makes my direct dealing with people more difficult. If one thing goes wrong or shipping takes longer then it should customers tend to think its another RICH123 or T Dub and so on.

The worst of it is some people are still using these low lifes behind the scenes despite all the people they stole from.

There was an article in DirtWheels about his red Raptor. Maybe someone could e-mail them and ask for an address of the sort and let the payback begin   8)

I don't think he does the extended stock swing arms. If he does this is the first I have heard of it.

Correct, he was extending and powder coating them. There was not deal or any advertising really, he stated on another forum that if anyone wanted it done to contact him. So to make a long story short, he has parts of mine and stated the work had been started and then he disappeared.  :(
