Title: Got a new smoker
Post by: preddy08 on December 11, 2009, 08:35:59 AM
Finally ponyed up for a smoker/grill last week. Has anyone every used the Big Green Eggs? They are AMAZING!!!! My old room mate had one and they are hands down the best smoker/grill!

Had to pony up just under a grand for it, but well worth it  I did some ribs last weekend. They turned out pretty good, but I'm still getting use to it. I've got two Cornish Game Hen sitting in spices waiting for me at home

Having a few prople over Saturday night, gonna do some wings, and maybe some ribs.

Great grills, bit over priced since there are a few others on the market.  But I see it more as a grill, not a smoker.  For the best smoking you need indirect heat, not under the meat.  but for the best grilling you need something like this since its insulated, keeps a consistent heat.

They have dividers you can add. the only place these fall short on is making brisket.  Everything else smoking or not is better in the Egg.

There are a few others (I'll track down the names) that offer a larger size at a better price.  When they were the only thing on the market like that I could see why the egg had that price point, but now that they have a few other companies making one like it i see no reason to spend that price.  For me I was only moderately impressed, it held temp ok (which is very important) but it didn't wow me at anything else.  I would like a better lift for the lid and a larger cooking area. Take the cost in to account there is a ton of other smoker grills I would buy.

I've found the tempature controll to be spot on! I could set some ribs at 250 and leave and come back in a hour to check them and the temp was always with in 10 degrees.

I will say that the price is a bit high, but you get what you pay for. I got a complete setup with all the egg-cessories  for 900 out the door. Sure you could go get a smoker and have some kick ass brisket, but then you'll have to buy a grill to do stakes. I'd rather simplify life and get one that does it all quite well.

The other company that your thinking of is Primo Grills, Their quality is'nt near what the egg is and the thing as a hole just seems cheap to me. Their price is still right up their with the Eggs too.

I just took off two Rock Cornish Game Hens and I'm now wishing I had taken a picture. They looked great, and tasted even better. I did'nt have alot of time to smoke them, but just enough time to get a slight smokey flavor. I put them on for about an hour at about 325, then the last ten minutes I blasted them at 450 to get the skin good and crispy. Good eat'ins that fo sho!

Eric, you need to make a stop in this area and I'll smoke you some ribs you soon wont forget!

My gawd man, that is pricey. I bought a grill in 2004 for $200 from Sam's and I freaked out about that. That thing has paid off though. Its cooked around 1000 steaks in the last 5 years.

Don't get me wrong, its a great grill, I do like the primo a bit better....the lid has a better spring system plus I like the oval design and the tables better.  But for me for that cost I would go with a full smoker/grill and be able to have it all. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10202039____SearchResults

only thing I dont like about those is the uneven heat from the heat box on the side. That and they are kinda ugly  :'(

If you have a good fire you'll get the even heat.  My friend can hold his at any temp based on how he adjusts the vents.  Plus the food it cooks is out of this world.  Best even head you can find, thats why the pros us a set up like this.
