Title: popping on deceleration
Post by: jjunkies on August 26, 2009, 07:44:28 PM
I have been reading about the problem I am experiencing now. I installed a new exhaust about a month ago. Had to clean and rebuild the carbs and found the choke cable and choke plug broken and rusted real bad in the hole with dirt and junk. I cleaned it all out and put it back together without the choke. It starts and runs fine but now this last weekend it started popping on deceleration. Could this be a part of the choke cable and choke plunger not connected. Would the plunger now be moving inword and causeing it to run lean. Last I also live in colorado and is there any one who can tell me the correct jet sizes to use. Also I have seen post regarding a map. I do not understand what this means I am sorry I don't can any one explaine it to me as well.

I have a 01 660 raptor.

Thanks

Only mod I have done is an aftermarket muffler. Then just cleaned out the carbs and found the cable to the choke busted and the plunger bad.

Maps are how Fuel injected Raptor 700 adjust fuel mixture. 660, you have to change the jets to a bigger size for more fuel. Bigger exhaust flowing more air=need more fuel to match.

Was the raptor originally purchased in Colorado?

What exhaust is it, and is it full, or just Slip on pipe?

Might be that you have wrong size pilots and A/F screw in wrong spot. Popping on decel seems to be a product of too much fuel. Choke not opening all the way?

Does it start from cold very well?

That's what I thought about the MAP but was not sure.

I am running the LEXX slip on exhaust pipe. I think it has always been in colorado from the start. Any suggestions on what jet size and other things I should use. I am thinking the choke pin is moving and not open all the way any more. The atv starts up every time when its cold but it does not smoke or stumble as if the choke was all the way open.

did you change the jets? If so what size were in there to start?
It says the size really small on the side of the jet. Just unscrew it.

For us normal people at liveable altitudes, stock is 140 left carb 145 right carb. For your mods, maybe one size up with no lid.

Whatever they are, you should go up one size (they come in increments of 5) But If you are still using stock air filter, I might not even change them unless you have pulled the lid.

My suggestion: Pull off airbox lid. Get jets one (5) size up. And tweak your A/F screw. Buy two jets: the two sizes above the your highest one. (right carb) then you have adjustability to the next jet size. Left side is one size lower than the right.
