Well in talking at Silver Lake this weekend we came up with an idea to go on the ultimate road trip. This is just in the birth of the planning but so far the plan is to take two weeks and pick the top areas to ride in the country and spend at least a day riding at each one. This will be big and we are talking with some of the mags as well as some of the tv shows to see if they would like to be apart of it. Since most if not all of us will be on Yamaha I think this is something they would like to be in on and we are talking with them as well. This is set for 2011 due to the fact that there is so much planning that will need to take place as well as people needing the time to save up the time off from work and the funds. So post up your favorite place to ride and we'll vote on what places to hit. This will be big and if you can swing it this is the one you are not going to want to miss.
So I'll start it off...My top pick is by far Glamis or anywhere Hefe is.
are canadians allowed ? ???
Yes, you'll pay extra...but yes.
I'll start saving my pennies now....

somebody already has dibs on my first born and ive given my left nut, i suppose i could sponsor a give away that month. ???
i'll be able to drive by then so possibly ???
+1 for St. Anthony's, but is this a dunes only trip? If not there are some epic trail rides in Taylor Park Co, worth adding
I don't think it will be a dune only tour since I'm sure some will want to check out some of the well known trail systems such as Hatfield McCoy.

Tim was telling me all about his trip he just came back from, I already wanted to go there but now I'm very enthusiastic about it.
I'm sure that place will be one of our stops.
I have prettymuch just rode in MI
but as long I am with this group.. holy crap!
not sure I can laugh that hard for 2 weeks

this was my exact thought.. No way.
cant wait!
the hard part of this cruise idea is to find the prime 2 weeks in the year that will provide warm/cold enough weather to ride multiple locations across the country. Obviously Glamis must be done, but you're not gonna ride it in june/july/august/Sept when the other locations are prime becuase it's too hot.
April and May are do-able for Glamis, but the northern areas like St. A's, Oregon, Colorado, and Silver lake might be too cold or worse have snow.
I think we need to get resident experts to chime in to identify a timeline for ridablity at our destinations of choice.
Aaron
perhaps there's an oppertunity here also with 4gunz big rig ???
Chartering him to hall all our quads and gear to our locations would certainly lesson the logistical burden on some of us, and with enough people splitting the bill it may prove cost effective.
that is already in the works
Don't forget an extra gut fellas! On a 2 week venture your surely going to completely bust at least one beyond repair!!!
I would say. shoot for fall or spring. Best chances to get decent weather where-ever you go.
When I moved back to Mn from CA I had my own little tour, All were on the main freeways on my way as well. 1st stop was Dumont (awesome), 2nd Nellis dunes (sucked), 3rd little sahara UT (ok) but was snowy lol, 4th Killpecker Wy .
On any tour I know Dumont and Glamis are "must go" places, dumont has some very steep hills and glamis is just the al'mighty of dunes.
Ocotillo wells is good, Pismo is a bit small, but it's on the beach so that's cool.
I would love to make this trip.
a "must" for me is Oregon......gotta meet up with our left coast crew. Sub454, RaptorRandy, Grant, Etc.
Oregon really needs to be in there, so Im thinking fall is going to be best for all. Even if we go to Pennsylvania, still needs to be in fall. Once it starts snowing in the upper states, it keeps going. I've seen it snow as late as June before. We need to make a final decision on which 10 or so places to go and then the route we are going to take.
My rig setup is going to be around $10g for permits and such, before fuel. Let me do some checking and see what I can do about that before anybody gets excited. The cost effect on it is almost not worth it, because there still needs to be a way to haul 25ish people. A bus rental is going to be around 2500/week times 2 at minimum before fuel. Lots to think about. Convoy might be better.
Dunes/trails whatever as long as it has a reputation. Need major sponsors. Also need a couple of good writers in our group to send articles to the magazines and get them to publish our stories and write ups. Press releases are going to need to be sent out to some of the local papers, things like this might get us in the gates for free.... maybe even some free catering.
I AM IN put me down on the list... hell it was my idea anyways so I better f'n go.
You guys should really look into Halsey Nebraska.

Fees are next to nothing three bucks a day and you need spark arrestors. Hours, HA, what are those!
heres chitty helmet cam footage. Just thumb through it, you'll get the idea.

very nice. Put this on the list. that power slide pic is bad ass
for all it will cost in fees my Hauler (with some creativity) should easily haul 14 or so
hell we could probably even do better than that
little bit of steel and a day of welding, I could add another rack to hold a couple more
it has a newer 454 FI motor, so it won't matter how many little quads are on it
won't slow it down a bit!

Can a nucca get some pics up in this mofo?
not much to look at right now, just a Chevy flatbed (old Uhaul truck)
it WAS a box truck, but the box has been removed and the aluminum flatbed is left
soon there will be a rack over the cab to hold another buggy
this rig will pull 2 buggies and the camper with no problem
I figure 4 quads on the back
4 to 6 up top (depending on the rack I build)
and a trailer with at least 4
so 12 to 14, depending on how many we get to go
I have access to a 30 foot gooseneck as well, so if need be.. we could bring a BUNCH!
I see no truck I just see a YFZ-R in the background.
and this has to be not during school season so i can go
Thats the down side for you, it will be in the fall.

Kyle, do you know the difference between camping and assrape?
there's a diffrence ???
FERK!!!!!! :'(
i don't think i could hit all the locations but i think if we stopped at "The Badlands" in Attica IN. here's a website for it. http://www.badlandsoffroad.com/
and i could probably make silver lake, and maybe little sahara OK if the funds are there for the trip. i couldn't do a 2 week straight ride though. :'(
Oregon dunes Winchester bay and/or Coos bay
St Anthonys Idaho
Pennsylvania ?
Chadwick, Missouri
Lake Murray, Oklahoma
Montana?
Somewhere that has a good trail system would be awesome.

Colorado FTW for the trail systems
It will be an impossible task to narrow this down to a feasible list, and then to get people to agree on the locations. Even then few will make the full trip.
Yeah, but as long as we have a strong core of 6-10 guys, plenty will meet up throughout the tour. I will go from beginning to end as long as its late fall or early spring. Riding places won't be to big of an argument as long as they are places with a little bit of history to the riding world. As for me, u guys pick em and I'll ride em.
We have a good idea where people want to go, and are open to other ideas. Once we get a list we'll plan it out. I still see a good core group going. This is the chance of a lifetime for most of us.

Right now I was thinking of this current list. If we start in the fall we'll need to start at silver lake due to the dunes closing. But if we do a spring trip it can be last.
Silver Lake
Hatfield McCoy
LS OK
Glamis
Dumont
Pismo
Winchester bay and/or Coos bay
SA
Stop in Colorado yet to be determined
End in chicago for a pizza party downtown?
Another idea was durhamtown plantation
We can add more stops because right now even if we did ride one day, drive the next we still have time to spare hitting all these stops.

I noticed alot of people wanting trails. I would HIGHLY recommend looking at Halsey, Ne. It would be a good mid way stop. I would try to visit it before they shut down the majority of the park. Riding is free and camping is 3 bucks! Free showers to boot.

The route from Oregon to ST.A's might be flawed a bit US 84 out of portland to US 15N then to Rexburg, ID. Should be quick than the northern Montana route
Good call Aaron, but what CO riding spot would you rate the highest?
Sand + trails Walden, trails only Taylor park
I fear that walden would be a let down for those making the St.A's trip too. It would be like going to glamis then silver lake next.....
Taylor park "looks" amazing (I will verify this in August), and has nice amenities for those who prefer not to camp. But it is strictly trails. From taylor park you can ride all the way into Aspen, CO, across the Continental divide numerous diffrent ways, to me it looks like the best Rocky Mountain experience with dozens 14K mountains surrounding.

Funny how it breaks up like that kinda huh ? Seems MR has got a hold on most the West coast, and PA area for some reason ? You guys have got everyone else pretty much on lock. Honestly, I spend more time there due to the fact that I ride the same type of riding as those guys, and meet up with them to ride -but I like to come over here 'cause I got love for most the people here.
So this thread hsa got me stoked, this would be a killer opportunity. I'll be marinating on how to pull this off for a while now, thanks guys
So I personally really (outside of sand) have always really wanted to ride in coal country (Treverton, PA) like someone else mentioned...the hillclimbs look dangerous...So I wanna see if I can crash on them bitches. ( I'm sure Jamie from MR would be willing to 'tour guide' us through this area) It is on private property, but they allow riding...LMK, I can get more specifics ?
Hatfield McCoy just looks undeniably kickass (so does Colorado !!!).
I know most people think sand when out west, but a little hard-pack desert riding baja style might be worth a day as well, especially if you're already in the Glamis area - very easy to get to.
As far as sand goes out west here, the places you HAVE to hit are St. A's, Glamis (obviously) and the Oregon coast. As far as the OR coast goes... Your real options as far as what'd be worth it are basically Florence, Winchester Bay, and Coos Bay.
If I had to choose one it would be Winchester Bay hands down. I don't really ride anywhere but the OR coast, and Windy bay is THE BEST. PERIOD. Florence you can ride the beach, and I'm sure that'd be cool for a little bit if you never get the chance, but gets boring real fast (the beach, not Flo). Florence/Winchester are about 15-20 min apart from eachother by the way - two days ? No?
Now the OR coast dunes aren't like anywhere else's dunes, the treeshots and hillclimbs, trails and beach, lakes... and just everything is pretty unique as far as sand goes, so y'all better not pass that shit up !!! Even if I can't make the tour, I WILL make this leg. FYI, depending on the timing- it might be cool to meet up with our HUGE NW Rally? The turnout was rediculous this year, we owned the dunes
I dunno about the other places, but again for the coast here: Glamis is pretty much out of the question as far as any later than May other than night rides. Even late may is pretty hot I guess ? April-may starts getting nicer up north here, April-Sept. is all pretty rideable as far as OR, but gets kinda sketchy sometimes toward either ends of the season. You're always gonna be rolling the dice in the NW in Spring or Fall as far as getting rain, kinda tough...
So I'ma see what I might be able to swing, cause this sounds like a fuckin killer time !!! If nothing else, Maybe I can swing something where I meet you guys over in that neck of the woods, and ride with you until you hit the left coast here (as good as that pizza sounds) ?
Only read the first post, but i would love to do a day or two at the Hatfield Mccoy trails!
2011 is also my graduation year, and it'll be my second year driving so ill have everything set up and ready to go for this trip! This will be my first raptorsource trip and probably the biggest and the best one.
If you hit Glamis, and plan on doing the OR coast... it might be worth skipping Pismo ? I've never been, but it deosn't sound like the biggest area for actual riding... anyone who's been there know if it's WORTH it if you have other options ? Seems kinda like it just gets crackin there once G gets too hot to ride... ???

Never rode there, but scenery is beautiful. I would visit that place all the time, I have family I would stay with that can see the dunes from the end of their street.
Ask Socal. He used to ride there I believe.
I will be there in the late summer/fall of 2011 anyways on a family trip. With, or without quad. Costs $250+ to ship it
yea trevorton is private property, there was about 2-300 people there when we went. the hills do look huge, but they are all fairly smooth and pretty straight, not too many obsticles or anything. we went one time, but people online say you have to pay to go there but nobody said anything to us about it. theres a whole bunch of trails too, we got lost and took about half an hour to get back. we ended up riding on the main road into town and right through city streets and nobody said a word to us. its like thats all they do in that town is ride. its pretty freakin sweet
I call a spot next to seg in the hauler! Sounds like a blast to me to hit some riding areas. :nana:
Afghanistan has some nice riding. I can show you some videos. Does this tour cover international war torn destinations?
been there done that, no spank you
Jamie said he's love to hook up with us in Coal Country and show us around to the good riding. As long as y'all are alright with us 'ol MR guys
Would be nice to have someone at each place who call's that riding spot 'home'. Not necessary, but there's definately some kickass stuff you'll miss your first ride anywhere...
The MR members are not the problem with that site. Jamie is good people in my book and I hope that we can make it out that way to ride with him. And Pismo is smaller then Glamis for sure, but you can't beat socal beach riding. I say its worth a stop on the way up to OR.
???

wow you raptor source guys try to hide everything from me. i dont know how i have been missing this post for so long lol. so far i have ridden in like 18 states and everywhere i have ridden sucks so i have no input as to where to go. trevorton pa is a very dangerous place. i havent really ridden there but i stopped there to buy a quad for my buddy when there was a group ride going on. if you guys do want to go there everyone will need the most badass skid plates and 6 ply tires they can find. all it is is huge rocks and all are sharp. i would love to ride there but also be very scared at the same time lol.
here is a list of what i would like to hit
glamis of course
hatfield mccoy
somewhere in montana
colorado
oregon
and then maybe finish up at silver lake

Once you guys (hopefully) get to Little Sahara, you will see where Gunnerz is coming from. BIG difference.
Can't say I'm going yet (work) but what does each state or park on the tour require to ride registration-wise? State parks down here require a sticker and you have to take a safety course to get the sticker (I think). I don't ride at the state parks.
I sure want to go!

Little Sahara requires nothing. 10 ft from the ground flag. and $7 to ride.
GOOOD THOUGHT !!!
WA/OR and I think ID all let you use a sticker from one of those other States. (They're like $10 or so)
We should definately find out all the rules/regs for everywhere to hit... like lights on your flags at Glamis for example, or DB limits places (like the OR coast).
Also, in the OR dunes you're going to need to do an online 'safety course' thing at some point. Younger people I think need to right now, and every year another age group will be required to until everyone is covered by the rule.
Good chance you'll never get stopped here for the DB check or the Safety course reg. check or anything, but best to not have to deal with it at all... Not that I think I've been DB compliant in like 3 years
Also, check the newer rules w/ the locals .... BS crap like 'NO RACING' at Sand Lake that just popped up ...WEAK...PASS !!! :wtf:
Florence has the drag racing rule now too. Coos Bay and Winchester Bay are still good i think?
FLO TOO!?!?! :wtf: Say it ain't so Rob, say it ain't so !!!!
That is epicly lame guys. :(
Lame like..................... RaptorRandy without his magic blue pills

Ouch! Yeah winchester bay, and coos bay are still good to go though. + most who ride coos bay know all the cops so it would be no hassle and there is way more camping at coos than anywhere
How about Croom in brooksville,Florida it's a fun place to ride. If I'm allowed I got a few I could throw.
Kind of a bump for this thread.
Can we get a list of definite stops and maybe poll some intermediate stops along the way? And a page 1 route/itinerary?
From Socal on page 4:
QuoteRight now I was thinking of this current list. If we start in the fall we'll need to start at silver lake due to the dunes closing. But if we do a spring trip it can be last.
Silver Lake
Hatfield McCoy
LS OK
Glamis
Dumont
Pismo
Winchester bay and/or Coos bay
SA
Stop in Colorado yet to be determined
End in chicago for a pizza party downtown?
Another idea was durhamtown plantation
We can add more stops because right now even if we did ride one day, drive the next we still have time to spare hitting all these stops.

a side question: How will my carbs like all the elevation changes?
carbs dont like elevation changes lol, bring tools and a lot of jets
Haven't been around in a long long while and just caught this thread. I would probably be able to hang in Glamis, Dumont, Pismo, Sand Mountain and possibly even Oregon.
OREGON IS A MUST OR ELSE IM KICKIN THE SHIT OUT SOMEBODY.
:D What, you mean you wanna ride HERE?:

What will this madness cost? I have tons of vacation, so that's not the issue, would just need to know how many pennies to save up for a trip of this magnitude!
that'll depend on how many sites you plan to join the madness on. I doubt if many can afford the entire trip. (I know we won't), but I'm planning on budgeting 3500 and see how far that can take us.
Aaron
I figured on having about $2g's for it. I will try my best to ride it out from beginning to end. Just depends on where we go. I like the idea of starting in Pennsylvania at McCoys and ending in Oregon.

more than I have. :( Looks like one or two dune trips at the most next year. I'd like to meet you guys at one of the rally locations though.
Probably the only affordable way to do this is carpool as much as possible and split the bill.
Some guys talk about their diesels pulling gross weights at 80mph and getting 20 mph uphill with the a/c blowing. Mine is not one of those.
Thats the plan. Im hoping to rent an RV and pull my enclosed. RV is about $1000/week, but if u divide that between 5-6 guys thats $200/week cheaper then a motel bill for a week.
http://www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/?gclid=COba-daQ650CFSANDQodbQvMPg
I will pick up guys along the way to the first location and be able to hold 5-6 quads.

My s10 barely gets that pulling two quads on an aluminum flatbed!
My nissan frontier 2.4 liter 4cyl gets 7 f**King mpg pulling two quads on a single axle 6x10 trailer. and reaaaaaaaaaalllllyyy slowly too.

Dont feel bad Disco. I have one of those diesels that are suppose to get 20MPG pulling 9 billion pounds in the snow, up hill both ways. What do ya know, I get 9-11MPG pulling anything big
Bumpity bump!
Anybody ready to lock down some dates for this? Assuming I can get the time off, I think what I may do is skip the higher elevation riding since I'm carb'ed and don't feel like changing jets constantly and just plan on being a designated driver in and out of that location.
Hoping to get some new suspension by then also.
Not sure I could make all of this trip but if it had most or part of this list I would sure do what I could to make it all.
This would be my list:
Coral Pink
Little Sahara
St. Anthony
Moses Lake camp over for 1 night intransit to
Christmas Valley Dunes
Oregon Dunes
Dumont Dunes
Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area
Amargosa Dunes
Sand Mountain
Not sure how much time you would need but this would be one hell of a loop.
I definitely want to ride the dunes in Oregon

For sure. Good chance a good portion of these dunes will be CLOSED (like all the trails, treeshots, you know- the cool shit!?) in the next year or so. Get here quick !!! They're working on legislation right now - there's a workgroup looking at a lot of options, and most the people in this group are NOT Pro-ORV people...
