Title: Building the Build
Post by: Alkire193 on May 11, 2009, 09:19:20 PM
Ok digging into these forums and reading a lot on everyones builds. But I just wanted a spot check on my build that im shooting for. Im learning as I go and the money is starting to pour into the motor thanks to everyone making me jealous with their 65-70+  :)

I have :

Hot Cam Stage 2
104 octane fuel
k&n intake with no airbox
fmf header w/ TBR pipe
PCIII

Which makes 36whp and 38 tq on the dyno ( yea......it sucks)

Im gonna buy :

CP piston 12.5:1 102mm std bore
+2 TB upgrade at KDS, shipping tomarrow or wednesday
x-4 cam that is F/S on here right now!

(hopefully just to get the power back I lost on the dyno with the stock piston)

What im thinking about :

dynatek ignition (non programmable)
+5 stroke crank

Anyone have some input?

The octane of the fuel is costing you HP for starters.
I would go with a TQS Tech 11.5:1 piston, with a stroker crank it will get you near the 12.5:1.
Go with a programmable ignition  you are leaving HP on the table by not adjusting the timing to your build.
The rockers and Head have to be clearanced for the Cam and you need stiffer valve springs.
Port work is where the real HP is made and there are several ways to go  there.
I can get port work done for a reasonable price with great results.
KBR, Racers Edge, and others offer porting services also

I would drop the 104 octane if your stock compression. The +5 stroke is extremly nice, but i would have it balanced if i did it again. It runs great, and has great power everywhere, it just vibrates pretty good, but nothin bad. If you dont mind running the 104 octane, i would go with somthin in the mid 11 range. Steve at TQS has a 11.5:1 piston that looks really nice, and if you do the stroker(which i would), the stroke will put you in the 12 range. I also wouldnt skimp on the head, that is where you can make major power. I know on 450s, head work makes the motor, and raptors are about the same. Kenny has a great deal on CNC stock valve head i saw, and stock valve will be plenty for that engine.

sounds good so far except balancing the crank. I just put one in mine and it actual took vibration away compared to the stock crank.Therace fuel isfor sure costing H.P

If you have no problem running higher octane gas. I would bump up the compression. Just remember like Air said, w/ the +5 Stroker crank it'll bump your compression up .5-1 compression points.

the +5 crank will actually increase the compression by .7 from what troy and kenny told me

First thing I would do is change the exhaust to a big single or duals.Second get an ignition for longer power band to take advantage of your cam. Third get the head ported. As mention earlier you need to have the rockers cleared anyway and you will see good power gains from a good flowing head. 12.5:1 with a +5 crank sounds a little high for 104oct. Go to 110oct or like mentioned earlier go with an 11:1 or 11:5 piston. Some other things that are not a must, but could be helpful would be a better intake and a longer swing arm.

Stock compression is 11.1:1 correct? .7 increase puts me close to 12:1 with the stroker. Lost out on the x-4, bummer. But heres what im pulling from you guys, which thank you ALL for your input!

+5 balanced crank for stroke
Larger cam, X7 probably
Porting, valve springs and increase clearance ( prolly KDS, I love what they do with the +2 and +3 TB's)
12:1 piston or 11.5:1 (still kinda confused)
+2 TB tomorrow its shipping to KDS
Dynatek non programmable ignition

Id rather not run the 104 anymore, mixing fuel sucks but 100 or 104 is totally ok, whichever works better with the compression.

please dont convince me to buy duals, they are expensive and 630 plus all the other work is gonna add up over my budget for the season. Gotta pay to play I know but ive got a decent exhaust with the FMF header and TBR pipe I think.

You can get a stock bore/stroke bike with head work for a reasonable price that will get you that 70hp or more

My recommendation would be the following and the best bang for the buck

You already have the PCIII and the TB coming so you're good there

Our CNC head +1 ferrea valves and springs (actually having a special on that now reg $906 until 15th of next month only $725)

Web 4 or x-4 cam

12.5:1 CP piston will be fine on 104oct

Dynatek Pragrammable

FCI intake

If you have any questons please feel free to call

I was on TQS and confused, the megacycle x-4 said core charge like they modify the stock cam to their specs. That might not be so bad.
They also sell CP pistons at 12.5:1 so thats a plus
AND the dynatek ignition (programmable), but it says you should be a little more experienced to use it, im technically inclined but very new to "dyno air/fuel compression ratio tq curve cam retardation" stuff so how would i program it?

Also, im seeing a lot of scattered opinions of Wiseco, Hot Cam and JE products. Finally settled on a CP piston but the brand of crank im stil weary on

barkers makes a good crank, so does hotrod.

Here is a general rule of thumb, it does vary depending Alt, bore size, piston, timing, but still a good guide. 11.5:1 piston or less is safe for pump gas 92oct. 12:1 or 12.5:1 you should run around 100 oct. Adding a longer stroke (+5) is going to add about .5 to your compression. So if you are looking at a 11:1 piston, figure you will really be running 11.5:1. Racer's edge does a good job on their heads and the price they are offering is great for a CNC head.  If I were you I would also buy the X4 cam from them and an 11:1 cp piston. They are also good prices and they will clear the head and adjust for the cam so your head will be ready to bolt on when you get it back. Racer's edge and others have put together some very nice stock bore stock stroke bikes, but IMO I think you will be happier with the +5 crank. To me the power is much smoother than my old stock stroke motor. Steve at TQS had the best price on the crank that I found.

Ok so heres what ive got going right now, revision number 3:

CNC head, valves, springs and clearanced for....
11.1:1 piston std bore
RJ cam
HotRod Crank +5
drop the 104 octane to pump gas
Dynatek programmable
+3 TB from Kenny

That will give a stronger torque and save me money on gas while making a dam sight more power
Thank you everyone for contributing! Its gonna be a beast

Youre right that is an awesome price, a steal compared to the others ive found so far.

We are offering you the same head that is on our undefeated stock bore/stroke. Just remember anyone can put a motor together, the head is what sets you apart from the rest  This head wins races. :batman:

Kenny has my head, piston, TB all in the works . My Hot Rod crank is en route from Utah and im shopping for a crank splitter and puller, so far I found one from Tusk. Its gonna be a monster!

My head is so cool...... It is nailing other heads girlfriends and smoking cigarettes while they are out racing..... It never feels threatened.  It's reputation is expanding faster than the universe. It once had an awkward moment, just to see how it feels. It lives vicariously through itself. The police often question it because they find it so interesting.......
