Title: Motor not turning
Post by: adee on April 26, 2009, 12:58:23 PM
Hi guys,

My starter not turning over the motor.
It spins, but not turning the flywheel.
Took of the side cover (4 8mm bolts).I can see the gears engaging, but motor not turning.

At first i thought it was the starter, but now i think the cambelt might have snapped.

Any ideas on how to faultfind?

Can you hear the starter motor spinning? If so, gear is not kicking out to hit the flywheel. Time for the one way bearing mod. $100.

Yes,the starter is spinning.

Please be more specific on the bearing mod.

What do i need to buy?

I'm experiencing withdrawal symptoms already..

a very common mod for the 660. Was getting ready to do this mod before I traded mine in. Here is one for sale on e-bay. Never done one before, but doesn't look bad.

Thanks,

The procedure is really detailed, but i think it's best to send to Yamaha to fix.

Be prepared for a huge estimate. I was just giving you a cheaper option. They will fix it too.

Certainly do what you feel comfortable with, but don't let them put in another OEM starter clutch.  You will use a new OEM starter gear though.

I would not replace it with another factory starter clutch,it wont last. The aftermarket ones from LA and extreme(same thing)are alot better and will last alot longer, especially if you have higher comp.,bigbore etc.
