Title: Colorado Noise Restrictions
Post by: Colorado700R on April 01, 2009, 11:06:25 AM
Guess what I got with my CO ATV Registration stickers ???

An inpending Noise law notice

Excessive sound from Dirt Bikes and ATVs has become one of the biggest threats to Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) use. Fortunately loud Dirt Bikes and ATVs can be fixed without losing any speed or power.

What we're doing
New noise limits are being put in place by OHV organizations in an effort to stop the flow of noise complaints that could lead to even stricter limits being enforced by the government. Some government-imposed limits can be so strict that they can effectively end motorized recreation in designated areas. It's already happened in parts of California.

It's up to you to keep your vehicle below these standards. Limits of 96 decibels are attainable, especially with stock equipment. Look for aftermarket exhaust systems that are rated for 96dB or below. Remember that louder doesn't mean faster.

What's happening in Colorado
In the spring of 2008, the state of Colorado enacted a law requiring all ATVs and dirt bikes operated on public lands in Colorado to meet a sound limit of 96dB(A) measured using the SAE J 1287 20" stationary sound test. The law takes effect on July 1, 2010.

During the summer of 2009, Stay The Trail Colorado will host events around the state where you can get your ride tested for compliance with the new law. Most vehicles will easily meet this standard. When shopping for aftermarket exhausts, be sure to look for models that will comply with the new sound limit.

For detailed information on what changes in the law are happening in Colorado, please refer to this short leaflet on sound levels in Colorado.

but...where is the fun in that?

96 decibels isn't that bad in may book. There is a park in Ill. that set it's limit at 92. GAY.

96 is awfully low....
I think barkers w/ quiet cores measure in around 96-97.

Welcome to civilization, it's 96 in Mi and Oh too.   I think it might even be lower in some states.

98 is reasonable IMO, 100+ is noticeably loud.

It's a thing of beauty.

Just keep it under 3500 rpm, and she stays quiet. Above that, and all hell breaks loose.

My FZ1 had that. "Ex-UP"  Opened a restrictor in the exhasut at about 5500 rpm. Actually,  this might be a great idea.

not sure what the added back pressure would do to a single cylinders valve train ???

I wouldn't see why it couldn't be done.

It didn't really make a huge difference. It was a valve that kept all four pipes separate longer before merging. When it opened, it had more top end, but didn't piss off the neighbors at low rpm. I think most guys removed it.
