Title: New Fourwheeler (PICS 5/27 LAST PAGE)
Post by: kyledvor61 on March 28, 2009, 11:35:22 AM
Picked up my new ride last night. It's a HOUSER 250r geometry frame with a YZ426 motor. Motor has a 450 cylinder so its the same as the yz450f dirtbike. The head is ported but I suspect theres more. Shorty exhaust.

Houser frame
PEP triple rate front shocks
Axis rear
Houser swinger
JD a-arms
Holeshots on back
beadlocks all around
burgard stem
Denton stabilizer

EVERYTHING AFTERMARKET. Theres only a few honda parts on it, so stfu

Not the best lookin, but it sure as fast of the few laps I took last night.

Going to take it out in the yard for a bit, then on goes the stock exhaust

Let me know what you gus think.

Notice, NO LINK rear end, shock mounts directly to the swinger. Pretty trick i think (http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn244/kyledvor61/DSC03548.jpg)

I like it better. Took a few laps round the yard. I felt very comfortable on it. Just my size. Front end is very nice so far, stays planted and very comfortable. Stabilizer feels very good, pinned it over some bumps and didnt even feel em.

Motor is a torque monster holy shit. throttle repsonse is truly incredible, I just cant describe it. Didnt get to ride for very long, but it seemed like it didnt rev out as much as the yfz. but all the power is down low, and i love it.

Peels just wondering, what makes you like the yfz better?

Also got 2 sets of handguards, filter, header, and Cylinder!

Not bad for $2700 I'd say :grin_nod:

I'm not completely sure, but I belive so. It's got no electric start, so thats 20 pounds less right there. and all the stuff is aftermarket so id assume its lighter.

You guys are funny, I'd take the new quad over a yfz any day of the week.  Any of you ever seen/ridden a Lonestar or Houser framed R?  And the 426 is an excellent powerplant, heck this is the quad I wanted back in 2003 when I got this raptor.

Ok, both of the quads are four stroke yamaha powered 450cc atvs designed for mx type racing.  Is it more about the styling or the premise of a pre-built atv from a manufacturer vs what is basically a standard variation on a custom 250R?

Two things I didn't like about the houser R, one was the ride, it just didn't suit me well.  And the second was the looks, I'm just not a fan of it.  Plus I would never pick up something that was used for racing by someone else, I just don't trust how they took care of it.

and Socal dont hate  I really dont care about the styling, i wanted a built bike and i got it. and its still a yami motor.

foundarealquad, I'm not racing it. I'd like to, but Dad wont let me, and im not old enough to race a 450cc machine.

No it's not technically the "prettiest" setup and doesn't look like a tricked out 700R hill shooter.  I was always partial to the front plastics and headlight setup from the '88 R in red.  But it is a classic look and still a good one to me.

nah i measured last night its 447cc. needed to replce the base gasket, found the head had some wear since one of the cam tower bolts was broke, and the cam wasnt sitting even. have to get a new race head, and that 447cc might turn into about 480cc

wasnt me. saw the base gasket was leaking and took off the head and thats what I found. Looked at it and Dad said I needed a new head. He said everything else looks good though. cylinder and piston were ok, so i might keep them in. but if he lets me im goin bigger on the bore.

not worth the 2 hp to go bigger IMO, not unless you need to re-work the cylinder walls.

wasnt me. saw the base gasket was leaking and took off the head and thats what I found. Looked at it and Dad said I needed a new head. He said everything else looks good though. cylinder and piston were ok, so i might keep them in. but if he lets me im goin bigger on the bore.

reason #1 for not buying previously raced, frankenstein quad.

That was a huge reason I thought it was a bad idea....doesn't matter how cheap you got it.  It may be cheap but you can't ride it right now since it needs to be fixed.

That has a bunch of factors to it...the work you had done, its been raced hard.  Your has had the same life this quad has.

I guess I don't see a difference b/w racing and "racing hard", if you're racing you're trying to win regardless.  The difference is the maintenance you put into it.  I have made efforts to properly maintain the mechanical workings of my atv, proactively replacing some parts and replacing others at the first sign of trouble.  When you're dealing with a performance engine the plain fact is that you're going to have a dramatically shortened lifespan, the difference b/w kyle and I being that his motor was designed for that level of performance directly from a motorcycle intended for mx/xc and mine has been modified from more humble beginnings as a lazy dual sport bike motor which yamaha threw reverse on and tweaked for trail atv duty.

Performance costs reliability and money no matter where it comes from, but the relationship of these is neither linear nor static.  New or used that motor of his was designed with short service intervals in mind.  Valve trains on such machines don't last long and the high rpm isn't exactly a favor to the bottom end either.  Hard to say how long such a motor will run if it's coddled, but IMO most recreational riders do not baby their bikes when they are on them.

There is no difference, racing is racing hard...same meaning, just different wording.

Yours is a different story, I know you've taken care of it.  I still wonder if it was messed up at barkers.  But I don't know if Kyle's was taken care of so I would be worried to pick something like that up.

Just thinking this is too much dough for a pieced-together quad that you have to tear apart. Kyle isn't really spending his own money yet, so no biggie for him. I would not buy it. And I would be pissed as F**k if I brought it home and motor was shot. But, as Colorado said "if he is happy, that is all that matters"`

I don't really call it a "pieced together" quad, it's a hybrid and probably the most popular type and one of the most successful race setups of the 90's.  This is exactly what pro riders were running in AMA events.  But I just need to shut up and let it die as well.

"pieced together" as in home-built. i am not as trusting as some of you. It is cool to have all that stuff though. But, I agree, I will stfu as well.  Let Kyle have his thread back.

Why is the head f'ed. You can have it repaired. KILLER BIKE IMHO!

Unless you can find a killer deal on another head, just have that one repaired. Send it off to Bo and be done with it!

thats the thing, we couldnt get it started yesterday. It has spark (brand new plug) and its getting fuel. It would pop and sometimes run for a half second and die. in the driveway we tried pulling and dumping into gear and that didnt work either. timing is dead on as well.

but before i took it apart, it took me awhile when it was cold. but once it was warmed up i got it first kick

nope not a clue. im just guessing it has to be the carb. it was being tossed around for awhile so it must not be working correctly. thats my only guess. timing is perfect, i know its getting fuel, and brand new plug has spark

what do you guys think of it? $30 and a few hours in spray paint later

hmmm

the only thing I can think of is... make sure the carb is getting gas to it. Otherwise, if it's not running, only logical thing I can think of is it being timing related.

Kyle, have you checked the richness of the fuel? We had the same problem with my YFZ and we had to mess with the fuel mixture for a while until we got it right. It would start, then die. After we got it warm  it would stay started but would pop.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Oh and Kyle... get a real quad!   :P  Just kidding buddy!

nope not a clue. im just guessing it has to be the carb. it was being tossed around for awhile so it must not be working correctly. thats my only guess. timing is perfect, i know its getting fuel, and brand new plug has spark

what do you guys think of it? $30 and a few hours in spray paint later

30 bucks in spray paint but it still isn't running yet.  Should of gone with the YFZ 450R
sure id take one, but i wouldnt be able to afford it until next year!

and nikki, thanks ill check into that. it has to be carb related it. i didnt check it before i put it on. ill take it off next and go through all of it.

WTF is up with that pipe??

just to satisfy the curiosity, remove the can..
see if it starts

you have a huge motor getting all this air into it (ported head)
and it can't escape (pea shooter exhaust)

let me know if that helps
its a long shot.. I know

1) cover quad in ether

2) add amonium nitrate a desiel fuel to gas tank

3) get looooooooong Jumper cables

4) spark to car battery

5) order YFZ 450R, and enjoy a quad that actually runs

its for my neighbors. They called the police when I first brought my YFZ home. it was 100% stock except for S/A pulled and appearently that was too much. also called on my Raptor 350 that had a HMF with quiet core, and my YZ80.

I have this for when I leave the yard which is now a badass flat black  (http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn244/kyledvor61/fourwheeler/DSC03540.jpg)

Title: Re: New Fourwheeler (PICS 5/27 LAST PAGE)
Post by: kyledvor61 on June 01, 2009, 08:36:49 PM
the timing was off. I dont know how it happened. We checked it 5 times at least, and it was perfect each time. We changed plugs, and got it to pop and backfire and run like shit while being pulled. from that we figured it was timing. Checked again and the intake cam was a few teeth off. :wtf: We checked it several times it was dead on. Put the cam back how its supposed to be. I started it up in 3 kicks. Loud ticking coming from engine. Tore back down and used feeler gauges to check valves. Intake tolerance is .004-.006 (I think, its somewhere around there). The valves were at .004, .009, and .014 :jaw: This was my dads error when putting back together. The exhaust tolerance is .008-.010 and they were .015 and .013. I then went to my dads shop and made my own shims on a lathe. Went back home put it back together and bam 3 kicks it fired right up.

Funny thing. it was running in the driveway and my dad says to rev it. He was standing opposite the exhaust side. Appearently I didnt tighten down the radiator line going to the motor, and poof the line popped off and like a huge squirt gun it covered him with radiator fluid. Emptied the system in a few seconds. funniest thing ive ever seen.

Got that tightened up and took it for a spin. all I can say is WOW. I truly dont know how it moves so fast. same motor as the yfz except for open intake and porting. Bitch scoots  throttle response and bottom end power is very nice

This motor has an oil conversion kit, so it doesnt have the oil tank. On top of the tank is supposed to be a return line that comes from the head. my other head had that port blocked off so it wouldnt flow. New head had that hole open, which I forgot about. So as soon as I get a plug for that, and my yard dries ill have some videos

and i put on all the fast stickers so now maybe ill have good luck

man it was so freakin funny. it just shot out, I really couldnt believe it flowed that fast.

on another note im guessing its running lean. I know the header gets red but this mofo was cheeto orange after idling for a few minutes. and the antifreeze was bubbling out the overflow as I shut it off. not cool. Not sure whats goin on there.

Bubbles..

What happens when the head gasket leaks is, on its compression stroke, the gasket cant hold it, finds the weakest point and pushes air that's compressed through the gasket into the water jackets.

Let me preface this by saying I have the utmost respect for you and your opinions.  And then let me say that I would take his Frankenstein monster over the old yfz in a heart beat.  Better chassis and frankly I like the 426 better than the old 450 too.  The yfz chassis is great, but it's not as good as this.  Maybe it's nostalgia, or maybe it's that the only thing that can beat the built 450's, zillas and banshees (and my raptor) on the ice are quads like this.  I've ridden them and there's nothing you can say that will convince me that the old yfz is a worthy replacement.  Now I just have to ride yours to see how the new R holds up ;)

didn't you have a YFZ before?
the YFZ is arguably the best MX quad ever made
yes i did own a bone stock yfz. for how much it would cost me to build it up, it wouldnt be worth it. I paid $2200 for it, put $3200 total into it, and have made more than my money back on the partout, with parts still left. I picked this up for $2700 and have a little over $3000 into it, for a full built MX setup.

I'm happy, and thats all that matters.
