Title: Slight ticking
Post by: gr8ride4u2luv on January 04, 2009, 10:03:28 PM
I rode the rappy for a few hours this weekend and there seems to be a real slight ticking in the top end like it might be the valves. Should this be expected with my build? I have had buddies with hondas and big cams and HD springs and it was normal for them. I race drag cars and am pretty familiar with how to adjust a solid roller cam so I am not doubting my valve adjust which I will check as this is my first quad motor build! I didnt think anything when riding it and rode it like I stole it, but you opinions would be great! Thanks

I have never heard a tick outta mine personally. Plenty of a rattle/vibrating type noise, but from what i read before that was normal. I would re adjust the valves, there probably a little loose

Yeah, I've had a tick on my top end before. I ended up needing to adjust the intake valves. Found out they were a bit on the loose side. Exhaust was fine.

The Stage III cam is noisier than the stock cam so its nothing you can compare it to. Its an all new cam, knowing the valve lash is right I wouldnt worry about it.

Thats what I was thinking. I got myself a hour meter so I will watch that religiously with any maintenance, I have 2 hrs on it after the build. I think after my next ride I will go back in there and check them  to verify. Should be 8-10 HRS total.

Mine had a tick when i got it also.. had the valves adjusted. Now the tick is always there but from what I hear theyll always tick somewhat. I think its pretty common with a new cam.

the hc3 is louder then stock but most the noise should go away with the right valve adjustment.....use the go/no go technique making sure the size right above the recommended feeler gauge does no slide in

I'd say check your valves clearance, they seem to be on the LOOSE side.

from what I've heard and been told, slight ticking with the hotcams is normal...mine has a slight tick....I've heard it referred to as sounding kinda like a sewing machine....

Yep, that's a hotcam, my stage 2 had that same sound only not quite as loud, my stage 3 sounded exactly the same.  I'll have to check but I think x4 sounds very close to that.

Ive accepted the fact that I have a noisy motor! I will just have to get use to it and check the valves often I guess!
