Title: gearing
Post by: spoiler61 on October 30, 2008, 11:26:07 PM
So, I dropped a tooth on the front to 13..That was w/ the big 3, now I have engine work done. I still come out of the hole hard, gaining in 2nd and 3rd when I hit 4th I loose some HP. My Q, is should I go up a tooth in the rear to gain on the top end and leave the front at 13, or go back to 14 in the front? This is all in sand...

If you go up in the rear, its like dropping a tooth in the front.  You might go back to the 14 and see how that does with the 38 in the rear.  I went from 14/38 to 14/40 this year with extremes and seemed to do good....going back to 14/38 this year to see what it will do.

im running a 13/38 right now. pulls 3rd up sand mountain. I bought a 12/40 to see if I can get 4th up the hill. right now Im beating a lot of people.( but we always want to go faster. lol.) my buddy runs a 12/38 and pulls a hard 3rd. (almost to hard) maybe Im wrong but when pulling the steep hills you want to go 12/40.  I won't be able to tell you how good it works until next spring when I go back to the mountain.

Everything comes Into play when gearing your bike, So Im not sure anyone will give you the answer you are looking for.
I think the best way to gear any bike Is with a box of sprockets and a radar gun.

Hour Meter/Tach from Yamaha

Could you use this tach to gauge your sprocket changes on the hill?
