Title: Need tire help! Groove razr 1's, or put GNCC's on???
Post by: r00st on October 25, 2008, 10:50:39 AM
I have in my possession some new ITP baja wheels (black) with razr 1's mounted front/rear (21 front/20 rear).

I also have a pair of 99% new ITP GNCC's in 20 inch.

If you guys had the choice...would you put the GNCC's on and sell the razrs

OR

Buy a tire siping tool (or a groover) to either Sipe the tires, or groove them (probably just one diagonal line through each tread block).

I think the razrs are a touch lighter than the gncc's, but the gncc is def. new technology and probably a little better traction (not to mention its 6 ply).

The only real benefit I see to the Razr 1's is they will match front/rear (not a big deal) and should wear a little better than the gncc's

Sliding is also important to me, and I think the firmer tread block of the razr would help me do that more (although on the flip side... I hear the gncc's slide really well)

Input is appreciated!!!

I would keep the gncc's, the gncc's are lighter. I bought my 700 brand new with a set of gncc's front/back. I still have the fronts on however my back one's got shredded on the dyno. I went to a local dealership and bought the itp holeshot HD'S because i didnt want to wait a week. All i will say is im going back to the gncc's. The grip of these tires are amazing and they will slide

If you bought another set of rims would you have to many tires?
I'd buy the siping tool for when your tires wear down & you want more traction
Do you have a siping tool picked out, do you have a link?

Run the Gncc's for trails and put the razors on if you go to the track (They slide much better)

IMO sipping is for a $30 or less tire not a >$50 tire.

I have not actually priced out the siping/grooving tools yet, but im thinking in the 20-40 range.

I am thinking if I siped them they would wear much quicker, due to a lot more flex in the tread block. I was looking at the tires today and am thinking a single diagonal cut with a groover (hopefully a thin tip, so im not taking out like 1/2 inch of tread...preferably like a 1/8 tip) would provide the best combination of wear/grip/slidability.

Unless... I get the siper and just do two lines in the tread (one on each edge of the tread block) that way the tread blocks will not be prone to moving so much.

I would just order up another set of rims...but I am really trying to get down to a single set of tires (coming from 4 sets of tires on my 730 lol). I just dont get to ride that often and its nice not having to worry about changing tires constantly.

I like the idea of siping a worn tire to add grip & get a little more life out of the tire.

I've never rode the Razr's.. But I'll tell you, I'll never go back to a different tire other than my GNCC Rears. 8)

gncc's are the way to go  if i get a set for my 350, they'll be gncc's. they hook up great, and they are also a great self cleaning tire, good if you ride mud.

i dont have any experience with the razr tho

right now I have 4ply Razr 1 on my quad all the way around.  Honestly, they're not the best trail tire, too much slide.  and not good hard pack launch.  I run Run my GNCCs for races, they are far, far superior all the way around, except on a MX track.
