Title: Help with paddle tires
Post by: Bleed_Blue on October 11, 2008, 11:12:27 AM
Looking to get some paddles for my Rappy, w/ 3 mods(K&N filter-no lid, WB pipe, programmer) & stock gearing.
I do general duning, so thinking about the Skat Trak Edge or ITP Sand Star.
What size is best...20 or 22? Suggestions?

The sand geckos are very, very heavy.  Almost 20lbs PER tire/wheel.  Thats a lot of weight to be turning on a already heavy axle.  The Edges are the best out there as far a v-shaped paddles.  They weigh a lot less and are actually taller and wider giving more height and dunablilty compared to the sand stars.  The first paddles I ever had were sand stars and I couldn't do hillshooting with them very well.  Went to haulers and it was a totally different machine.  Would go up any hill I pointed it at.

If you are into racing or just general duning you can go with the Skat Haulers or Extremes.  If you ever think you will be going towards the 60-70hp range, I would go with Extremes.  You can do a 21x12x8 bead to bead (they shave down the whole tire not just where the paddles are vulcanized).  As far as # of paddles.....a 4 stroke doesn't like to be over paddled.  I am mid 60s-upper 70s HP and run a 8 paddle extreme (ripped up the haulers) which is equivalent to a 9 paddle hauler.  On a 3 mod or even if you are planning on doing more, I would stick around 8 or 7 paddle.

I went with the Sand Stars - Size: 20x11-10 on ITP Pro T-9 wheels

They are nice and light, so it should recude the weight a little.

+1

The only thing I would add is the number of paddles varies depending on where you are riding. Sand can be softer, finer, wetter, etc. depending on which sand dunes you ride in. Elevation also plays a factor.

Not really.  Overall, they're a great sand tire.

I agree. They are a great all around sand tire. That's what my kids run on their z400 and z250. Just comes down to how you ride and what you want out of them.

I have the sand stars and love them for all around riding. but for hill shooting or racing the haullers are the way to go. I got my  handed to me this weekend by bikes that I should have killed on the hill. I need haullers bad!!!!!!!!!!

My experience is riding in the Oregon Dunes, so I have no idea what the sand is like where you ride. My experiences may be different from what works there. IME, the 22s give better hookup and more ground clearance for doing tree shots. The downside is ya can't throw the bike around as easy since the tires tend to dig and grab better. I think it's because they have a more "rounded" effect as opposed to the 20s which have a flatter effect on the tire. Since it's a little taller it tends to be a tad more tippy doing high speed cornering in sand trails or side-hilling. I am referring to 22" haulers, as I've never ran 22" sand stars.

with the torq of a raptor in 3 mod form, What ever style you choose, go 22" tall tires.  anything less will be a spinfest

Ahh yes I forgot to mention that.

I used to run 22" but when I talked to John @ Sand Toyz he said they do the 21x12x8 bead to bead buff but still get the 72" roll out of a 22" tire and they weigh a lot less than a 22" carcass that they shave down.  With where you ride, the sand is usually soft and fluffy and are at a lower altitude so you could probably get away with more paddles.

I recommend a 21 or 22" tire on an 8" rim.  More flotation and less weight.  Sand loves to kill power so you want to try to help out the quad as much as you can lol.  If you are not able to flip your butt end around, put more air in the tires.  I run around 6-7 lbs and can flip my back end around pretty easy and do some nice roosting  :grin_nod:
