Title: Hurricane Ike
Post by: disco on September 11, 2008, 04:47:20 AM
Anybody else in southeast Texas?  We gonna get pounded.  I'm just north of Houston so I'm going to be on the east/ugly side of this thing when it hits.  Happy happy, joy joy.

Here's the newspaper website if you want to follow the carnage:

We got nearly seven inches of rain, and 50 mph winds from Gustav. We're 600 miles inland from New Orleans, and 515 miles inland from Houston.

I hope you guys will be alright down south.

Hell, we got 3 inches in one day from Gustav, caused a leak in my roof. And, I am way up here in Iowa. Looks like Ike will stay south. We will be thinking about you guys, though. We have old friends in Beaumont, Texas. I bet they are worried.

I am sorry for wishing it away disco.  ;)  I live an hour south of San Antonio and we were the target 2 days ago. Now it is heading towards you and my future/father-inlaw who lives on the NW side of H -Town. But it is still 1 1/2 days away so it is still anybodies ball game.

HAhaha!  It's all good!  Maybe it will drive the Katrina Krimewave evacuees back home.  Gustav didn't do anything at my place.  Got a nice breeze and maybe an hours worth of light rain.  That was it.

I'm going to work tonight and then when I get home it's time to batten down the hatches.  A buddy stopped by and said there was a line going INTO Walmart.  He said you know if there's a line going in the store, it's going to be empty the time you get in there.

Well Ike is under way of destroying Galveston. The weather man just said that in my area we might see anywhere from 30 to 70 mph winds. I am an hour southeast of San Antonio.  :(

Did you know that 35% of the nations fuels are supplied by the refineries in the Houston area?
I heard that fuels along the Texas Coast are already around $5 a gallon.
Title: Re: Hurricane Ike
Post by: Peelz on September 12, 2008, 08:14:23 PM
About the fuel: I called it yesterday. I listened to NPR radio and heard an interview with a local. They said they were evacuating the refineries. So, I went and got gas after work at 3.44 a gallon...today: $3.59. Crazy

About Ike: Expecting up to 20 ft surge. I have been to galveston before. I don't think any of that Island is more than 20 ft above sea level-yikes! :help:

Got the call from our friends in Beaumont..errr...I mean Arkansas for the weekend. Evacuted this morning. That bugger turned north, I was hoping it wouldn't. Good luck all you guys down there!

Just wanted to post an update on my area from Hurricane Ike. We got extremely lucky and the entire storm missed us. We did not even receive a drop of rain.

The future father-inlaw in Houston, however, needs a new roof and some stategic tree triming. Thats about all for him, I guess he is kinda lucky too. But he still has no power and water.

Post by: socalrappy700 on September 15, 2008, 07:31:24 AM
we're fine.  The main road by my neighborhood is closed due to flooding and the big pond behind my house is over its banks but still a long way to go to my house.  My grandfathers basement got flooded but not too bad so everyone is ok.  Des Plains (chicago suburb) is in bad shape.  The des plains river flooded over and half the down town is under water.

Any word on the rest of your family in Texas?  Everyone ok?

Family friends in Beaumont, TX weren't being allowed back in yet as of yesterday. They expected it to be today to survey the damage.  :(

All the flood waters that receded around here since spring flood have risen again, local river 5 ft above flood stage.

Yeah, everyone is okay. The future father-inlaw needs a new roof. My sister lives in College Station and on Saturday she called and said it was raining for 10 hours straight and still no stopping at that time.

I hope everyone dries out ok!

My power is out but my roof is still on.  I lost an oak and little whirlybird attic vent on the garage.  I have a neighbor that works for the power company and he said we are looking at about a week before power is restored. My house is all electric but I got food and water stocked.     I'm posting from my phone at work. I got nothing at home for cell signal. That sucks.  I get away from the house and all the emails, voicemails and text messages come pouring in.

The wind was pretty crazy. I konked out around 6 pm. I figured once the winds started I wouldn't be sleeping too much. I was still able to sleep through parts of it. I propped the back door open a few inches for some fresh air.  When the wind really started howling I'd wake up hear all the trees creaking outside. I heard a few come down.

Now kind of a rant:  never before have I heard so much pissing and moaning about the power being out. Its a stinking hurricane 200 miles wide. You know its coming.  Prepare for it!  Yeah it sucks living in the dark and a/c sure is nice. Saturday afternoon once the wind died down, everybody is out driving around checking stuff out. These same people are the ones fighting in line at the gas pumps.
