Plug chops

Colorado700R:
There's allot of questions from folks about..

"What is a plug chop?"

"When should I do a chop?"

"What am I looking for?"

Well as the old phrase goes..A picture is worth a 1000 words, in this case I'll use words pictures and a short video.

What is a plug Chop?
A Plug Chop is a method used to determine a rough idea of a proper A/F ratio in your motor.  The method requires you to remove the spark plug, and inspect the insulator around the inner electrode.

When should I do a Chop?
The raptor 700's don't give a decent plug chop reading until about an hour of run time on a new/clean plug.  If you load a new map, or make other adjustments or modifications to your quad, make sure you run it for an hour on a clean/new plug to get a decent reading.

What am I looking for?
Like stated above, you looking at the inner insulator around the electrode.  If it's paperbag brown, your good, if it's black you're rich, if it's white you lean and potential dangerous to your motor.

In the picture below, you can see my NGK CR8eix plug inner insulator is paperbag brown.

This short video should help too, sorry about the blurriness.

Hope this helps,
