Steering stem removal advice

What is the trick to remove a steering stem. Is there a bearing I need to remove or is there a trick to it?
Do I need to remove the plastics???

They arent' to bad to get once you have the plastics and gas tank off to see what the biz is going on underneath! Glad you got it off!
