Radiator leaking
« on: October 07, 2008, 10:24:38 PM »
My quad has a leaking Radiator.  I can't find the whole, but it seems to be coming from just above the lower hose

Can I try any of those stop leak chemicals?  or should I see if I can have it repaired?

IMHO I would try and get it repaired if it is possible. I have always looked at them rad sealant things as more of a get you home mode.

From experience......

We had a 97' Ford Escort, bought it from my best friends dad, he hit a deer with it. My dad is rather auto body saavy so we fixed it up and drove it. It always seemed to run hot (not over heating) but... hotter than youd link a little 4 banger would... Head Gasket ended up going out after about 20,000 miles put on it since we owned it. We had it fixed. when the head was apart. There was a goo all over inside the water jackets. I talked to my friend. the radiator had been leeking off and on. They kept putting the Bar no leak stuff in there.. (comes in a black bottle and sounds like water with chunks of crap in it..) well.. in a nut shell. we pulled the radiator. could see crap in there..... replaced the head gasket and radiator.. thing never ran better and cool as freakin ice.. (not quite....)

just my 2 cents... the stop leak stuff is a band-aide. I'd suggest... ESPECIALLY if you're going to race it.. you have it fixed proper.

Yeah, I agree with Krandall. Getting it home is okay to use that, but for the long run get the radiator repaired and fixed.

yeah it only cost me $20 to get my rad fixed. of course i knew where my hole was at in the rad too. but if they have the right stuff to fix it they should have the proper way to test it for leaks. which in turn they could find the leak for you.

Pulled it out to take to the shop.  I haven't found the leak, but hopefully they can  :(

Leak is in the core, about 2 inches from the bottom, and 2 1/2 inches from the left on the the front side.  Cost me $15 to find the leak, and $20 to fix it.  I pick it up tonight.

Just picked up.  He fixed it with some JB weld.  Looks OK, but not pretty.  He said it'll hold, and if I have any issues that he'll stand behind his work, and fix it for free.
