Well, the way I look at it is, grip glue cost me $2.00 so why not go with it for $2.00 and not have a chance of having any issues, right!
Is the grip glue working well so far?

I used Scott's grip glue. So far so good, but it's only been a week. Look on Ebay for the glue that's where I got it.

 ???
Spray paint or hairspray to  apply grips, I swear by spray paint so far. Grips have been on for 6 months with no movement.  Never tried grip glue & spray paint is always available.  Be sure to let any method dry completely before riding.

I would try cleaning the handle bar to gain some adhesion.  I spayed paint into the grip so that I could see paint roll around inside the grip & have coverage. After twisting it on the paint seems to spread out nicely.  I'm guessing too much isn't a good thing or it will take forever to dry.  Hope this helps  ;)

If you are having that much trouble... look into OURY's locking grips.  They mount with screws and such.   The hairspray trick should work though.  You may want to lightly sand the bars to gain "grit".
