Well the dates are picked for the 2009 RaptorSource.com/RaptorForum.com Raptor Rally at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Mears, MI. . :clap:
First Rally - June 19-21, 2009
Second Rally - September 10-13, 2009
We had a great turnout and a lot of fun last year with the first two Silver Lake Rallies and look to repeat that unofficial fun this year. Group rides and BBQ take place on Saturday, but usually a large number are at the dunes and riding Friday morning or midday. Sunday is usually reserved for return travel but some members stick around to ride.
Schedule
Friday
- 9:00am to close
- No group events. Many members will be there all day.
Saturday
- 10:00am - Group ride; assemble in the parking lot and then we'll ride for about an hour to an hour and a half.
- 12:00pm - Lunch; BBQ at the same place we met up for the group ride.
- 02:00pm - Assemble somewhere in the dunes for a group picture.
- Afternoon - Ride with other members, or go out by yourself. Staging area will be the same. Times vary according to need.
Sunday
- No group events, most will be headed home.
Donations are not required to attend of course, but they are appreciated. It will be used to help purchase food and beverages (non alcoholic only at Silver Lake) for the BBQ at the rally as well as other supplies. We plan to have a setup similar to the last rally complete with full size grill and large food table. Remember that Silver Lake requires a specific color and flag size, so it may be best to mount this flag in ADDITION TO instead of replacing your original flag.

I managed to get the cost down to 182 out the door
this is a NICE room with 2 beds
they allow for 4 people per room
split that among 4 guys that only comes to 45.50
think about it..
45 bucks... clean beds, hot showers, coffee and doughnuts waiting for you in the AM
they have excellent parking for your "longer" rigs
fire pit out back, a pool, ..WiFi

I think I'll only be able to make 1 rally a year for cost. I voted the early June weekend, When I was there not this year, but the year before. It was awesome weather. Warm but not BAKING. :thumbs:

hell no, if you think it will change that much in a few weeks your nuts. The average for the end of June is still under 80. I could ride in 80's all day long. That's great riding weather for silver lake with that cool breeze off the lake. This year it was friggin cold when we went in the beginning of June. I want nice weather.

Yeah but you've spent years in cali and have become acclimated to weather that makes midwesterners sweat just thinking about it. 80 is freaking hot in this part of the world, upper 60's is nice.

I lived in Cali. and I have seen much hotter weather in the summer here in the midwest!
I will probably be in for a mid to alte June bu8t will hold off voting til I see my wife's schedule, and I don't get ahead of myself like I did last year. :lol:

Is it true you have to have a spark arrester and be 94db or under to ride at Silverlake?

It is there but not as big as some dunes.

Damn... I forgot about silver lakes spark arrestor rule (been like 4+ years since I have been there).
How much does sparkys for barkers cost? My buddies have some laying around from their yfz exhaust... I might just jerry rig those up and make them fit.
What I used to do wit the POS MRBP exhaust on my first DS650 was to buy screen mesh (from a screen door) at the store, cut it and bolt it in. Worked like a charm! Only for about 300 feet...once You get on it, holes get blown in it lol.

i have a hmf and totally agree. the pipe is LOUD, but not too loud for me. but last time at silver lake dunes, we were the last ones in the lot. i took my bike out for one last lap and i was the only one out there. when i got back to the trailer everyone said they heard me the whole time around the place. so i let my dad hop on my bike and take it and it is loud the whole way around. so yes i agree it is loud, but i like it that way

hmf spark arrestors are $9 from bikebandit dont spend $60. if the hmf do work(which im not sure) bike bandit is the way to go

From what I found out its 450 rideable. That's about 1/4 of Lil Sahara. IDK about HMF out there with the db's, but my kfx is loud as f@#k w/HMF.

Warren, I think I may cancel the LS trip to check out SL and make a big trip out of it. But keep my once a year LS trip. Not 100% yet, but looking that way. Sorry Bro. :( Don't hate a brother. :lol:

I want to check it out, it is not that far away. LS might be too expensive for twice a year. ??? I will probably still go in Fall. $ is not what it used to be. Really hard to organize a ride that far away.
Plus, just to ride with all the other raptor guys again would be sweet. I haven't decided 100% yet. Gonna talk to my Brother.
Problem. If I go to LS: may not have enough $ or vaca. time left for SL. WHich I really want to do. But still go the following fall.
+LS is much, much better in the fall. And less chance for Rain.
Plus from the pics you had, SL looks just as fun, just not as big.

I'll agree it's nice, but IMO it's really not as nice as the price. I would say it's on par with your typical middle of the range hampton/comfort family type of hotel. There is a comfort inn in hart off highway 31 that I haven't been too but I hear is fairly typical quality. The water front rooms are kind of expensive and you've still got a playground between you and the water. But it's not a bad place and if your gf likes it then that's all the explanation I need. I still think the Sierra is just as nice as the Waterfront while still being cheaper and barely more expensive than Silver Sands. Then again, it's harder to go to hang out when everyone abandons you for another hotel.

found this youtube review of silver lake. Done by a novice rider. Looks just like a small Little sahara...but with the view of the lake. Dunes don't seem to be as extreme, but looks like some good jumps. Might make me homesick E. :lol: Oh wait...too late.
On the boring side at 7:08 but may help you guys who are like i was and thinking it wouldn't be that great. Looks like it will be fun as hell, plus it will be all us raptor riders. :thumbs: Check out the widened Renegade with paddles on all corners. Nifty.

I can't remember the last time I heard vouchers ran out, I didn't have a problem getting in the last time I was there for the July 4th holiday. They are simple and free, though I admit the premise can be unnerving for first timers.
Tenting is great, there are number of good campgrounds around. I have always preferred the State Park but there are a lot of others in the area. Prices are reasonable from 20 bucks or so per night.
As Tempt said check out the silver lake forum, lots of great info there.

i have a question. in june last year we were drag racing on the flats just to the west of the big hills. but then in september there were huge water holes out in that same spot from all the rain they had up there. i'm just curious if all those holes will fill back in after the wind blows alittle bit. because the spot that we had to find in september to drag race sucked compaired to the flats that we had in june.

Most years the flats stay dry, last year wasn't one of those years. The dunes change a lot year to year and it's hard to say what next year will be like, but they are putting up some barriers to try and catch more sand so we'll see what happens.

you can get your flag at the race shop that is like 20 feet from the entrance to the parking lot. they are $25 unless their prices went up.
i have a question. i know i asked both time i went last year but anyway. what's the price difference between a daily pass and an annual pass? i can't remember. i'm only going to make it up this year in june but if the annual pass is going to be cheaper then the 2-3 daily passes then i will get that.

Daily is 6 for MI residents, 8 for non-mich residents. Annual is 24 for MI residents and 29 for non-mich residents.
So it really only takes 2 weekends to pay for the annual pass.

Ok, so here’s the deal. We’ve been working with Yamaha to get a group event out at Silver Lake and they are planning on being there the on May 16th-17th. We really wanted them to be able to come the same weekend as our rally but it was something that couldn’t work out. Now, we can do one of two things, change our rally date to be there on the same weekend or leave the date the way it is. Please vote for what you would like to do.
Yamaha will be bringing their full line up of ATV’s, UTE’s, ext. These will be available for test rides through out the weekend. Also, there will be a lunch on Saturday, if we change or rally date we will be involved with the lunch and doing a give away. I’m also sure that Yamaha will have some swag gear to give way so all in all it would be a great weekend to meet up with them and try out some of the new vehicles.

So I may not be going on the big dunes trip we typically do every year (Little Sahara, Utah).
I am considering going to the rally instead, since its 5 hours instead of 21!
I have not been to silver lake in about 5 years. I know they require spark arrestors. What I did a few years ago with my exhaust on my DS, was cut some heavy duty screen (cut to shape) and bolted it behind the end cap. This got me through the checks at the gate and into the park (but blew out while riding lol).
How much and where can I buy actual spark arrestors for my barkers? I dont really want quiet cores and I think that is the only way they sell them is quiet core and sparky together?
Does anyone know if an HMF Small screen spark arrestor (just the circle with the domed shape screen sparky) will fit inside a barker end cap? Last I knew those were pretty cheap (10 bucks each?). That way I could have a more legit way of getting into the park and also not have to worry about them blowing out.

hey guys i'm about 90% sure that i will get the day off. just so everyone knows my plans if i do get it. my girlfriend and i will be heading up there thursday night after i get off work. i figure that puts us up there at about 10-11PM. we will be hoteling that night and then hitting the dunes friday morning, and plan to stay until sunday morning and then we will be heading home sunday morning after breakfast. and if scurry57(carey) can room with anyone or get a room he will be heading up with us too.
do we need parking vouchers(sp)? and if so do i need one for friday?
and what are the costs of the stickers again?

I don't have a trailer or even my quad down here, it's all up in mich in pieces hoping it will be together for the rally. I wouldn't be able to offer you a spot on the trailer anyway. I will just have to get the quad fixed and down here so I can come out and ride at your family's place. :thumbs:

State Park Day pass $6 you need one for your car and one for EACH quad
they offer an annual one too $24 same goes for the quad

You may be able to get away with just loosening the clamp and folding the handlebars forward or backwards, depending on how close of a fit it is.
I will have the prairie and the 660 on the trailer, but if I put them towards the front of the trailer I may be able to fit a 3rd on. I realize it's no enclosed trailer though.

1. Yes your barkers will pass just be easy on the throttle as you pass the gate.. I got checked with LTE's with old blown out packing and was 97 db no Quiet core. YOU DO NEED A SPARK ARRESTOR.. They check everytime for a sparky except sometimes during the week..
2. SWEET :thumbs:
3. The Voucher thing is no big deal. The way i do it is as I leave the dunes i go get inline for the vouchers or if leave the dunes early just unhook the trailer and roll down to the voucher station..
4. Daily pass last year was $8 a day.. You need the ORV for the quad thats $16.25 I think. You need a Daily pass for the truck and quad per day.

Ok so here is the deal... A buddy and I MAY be coming. If we did I think we would come up saturday morning, ride all day saturday and then ride a bit sunday.
I just called the hotel and apparently they are booked up. Does anyone have a room they want to split with two more guys? The operator at the hotel said they have plenty of roll aways so im sure we can cram them in there (or even just bring sleeping bags for the floor). I have stayed here before and its a pretty nice place and the rooms are of decent sized.
I have a few messages into steve about getting me two of those universal Spark arrestors (HMF ones I think) for my barkers but no response yet...guess it ulimately depends if he can get two sparkys to me before the ride date!
Is anyone camping? Might have to even consider that if the weather will be half way decent.
I just finished my build and bought some extremes and missed out on my riding groups "big" ride out to Utah last week, so I at least want to hit up the miny dunes and meet some forum members!
If anyone has a good place to buy those universal sparky screens at a good price online let me know so I can purchase some ASAP to get them by friday. Steve only charges 10 per (so like 27 shipped priority). I found a few places but some want almost 20 bucks PER screen!

Alright so im MAYBE going to come (possibly just for saturday, drive up - ride and drive home).
I have not ridden at silver lake in about 5 years. I remember back in the day there was a huge PITA process to get a vehicle parking permit...does this problem still exist? We used to have to line up the night before to get a permit for the next morning!
We have to have MI DNR stickers to ride, right? What is the process for getting this? Just stopping and buying one and putting it on? Do we have to have any proof of ownership or anything to get the sticker? I know in WI they make you show proof of ownership/ proof of paying sales tax in your home state to get a sticker
Also...Warren, are you sparkys/quiet cores called for? I told steve not to send me any thinking I wasnt going but now I might be but will obviously not be getting past the check station w/o sparky's!

Guys i got a question on the silver lake..Im not going to get to make the rally but will be there the next weekend.It sucks but its the only time i can go..Anyhow im running my monster pipes with the screens,are they gonna check the decibles (test).
2nd the flags i got a couple flags(bike) that are 10ft long and the flags are 10X10 1/2..Will this be ok.I have never been there and 7 of us are going up for the day a week from sunday.Is there anything i really need to know.I really appreciate your response..Also i dont have paddles just my razor 2s will this do.

Eagle I have not been lately but can give you info based on riding there 5 years ago!
You will be just fine riding on razrs! Sometimes its more fun because you can whip it around easier
When I used to go they were not really THAT careful with checking DB's. If you roll up at 75% throttle and its loud, they would check you. If you rode up at lowest throttle possible you would be ok as long as you have sparkys (which you said you do). I used to ride with a sparky in my MBRP pipe on my DS650 and it was 106DB but they never checked me so I was ok.
Your 10FT flags are A-OK. They used to sell flags at the parts shop on the dunes parking lot too so if you break one or cant get some in time you can buy them there.
If you have never ridden dunes before I must warn you: its a blast and you will be back :)

lol yikes... Its actually funny because I have almost biffed it twice back at silver lake (5+ years ago) and the damn dunes are only like 500 acres. Funny considering in the REAL dunes out west I have ridden probably 100 hours over the last 6 years and never biffed it once.
Those little witches eyes/pockets/G=outs at silver lake can kick your butt!

My thoughts from the other thread.
Home from the GREAT weekend. And this may be my only serious post but I have to say I've never gone riding with a better set of guys. Our newcomers to Silver Lake, Shawn (preddy), Mike (Gunny) and Eric (Peels) are top notch in my book and for sure my brothers from other mothers. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time, this weekend was just what the doctor ordered in my life right now. Thanks to all that showed up and made it such a great weekend. And thanks to Shawn for cooking last night when everyone else was too dead tired to get up. The stories we all will have from this weekend could go on forever. By far my top Silver Lake rally. I still find myself busting up laughing just thinking about all the BS going on around the camp fire or out in front of our hotel room. I already find myself looking forward to the next time we all can do it again. And the 2011 US RaptorSource tour is going to top it all. Thanks again to all for the memories and some great duning.

Is there a seperate thread for the September Silver Lake rally, or are we using this?
A new one would be convenient ;) :thumbs:
I am hoping to have my motor back together by then. I just bought some spark arrestors for my barkers and still have my extremes mounted up from the last rally (that I conveniently did NOT make!)

This year there will not be a fall organized Silver Lake rally. Instead Raptorsource will be doing a rally at LS.
