ran it with 1qt 8 oz oil
« on: December 30, 2008, 02:30:54 PM »
I just finished putting up a 869cc motor, and during break-in, it leaked almost half of its oil through out the clutch lockup cover.

I did not notice it until a was done, though the break-in did not last that long (maybe 3 minutes of hill shooting)

the quad was a strong runner and did not see any power loss, oil in the exhaust tips, over heating, or any weird noises.

when I drained whatever oil that was in there, most of it came out of the crank case, and very little from the oil tank.

I have found metal shavings in the oil filter; this is normal for complete builds, I presume: and the amount was very little.

the question here is:

Should I cont' to run it like I stole it?
OR
tear it down for complete check up?

need your opinions.

I would pay close attention to it.

Metal shavings in the oil after a fresh buid is normal. they should be super tiny, i know I had some in my oil after my fresh build as well.

I think you should be perfectly fine.

If some came out of the oil tank/reserve than it had enough to supply the crankcase.

As long as you didn't pick up any vibration and it runs smooth, and doesn't make any noise then I would just keep a close eye on it and keep checking the oil filter and change the oil after each ride for the next couple of rides and run it as hard as your comfortable with.

Randy

vibrations are as it used to be ( minimal), I checked the oil filter again and there was some shavings, but not as much as the first time.
This thing is powerful, I do not  think there are any damages.
