need some help real bad
« on: September 30, 2008, 07:24:55 PM »
ok i have an 03 raptor 660 and its burning oil really bad. i had it in a little while ago to have a new clutch put in, but the guys i had do it didn't put in the lower front motor mount bolt. As a resalt it cracked the valve cover. they fixed that but as i started riding it again it started to burn oil right of the bat. it has been getting progressivly worse sence then. i talked to a local dealer and they said it was probably the piston rings (every one els agrees) untill i went to a different dealer and they said that it was probably the valve seals and the gaskits. what do you guys think...i'm really stumped on this one...any one got some advice?

You need to purchase or find someone with a leak down tester... with the piston at TDC, depending on the type of leak down tester, some are single gauge and some are dual gauge. I use and prefer the dual gauge as pictured. You screw the adapter into the spark plug hole and put 100 PSI in the cylinder and watch the percentage of leak in the second gauge and listen to where the leakage goes. If the second gauge is at 80 PSI then you have a 20% leakdown rate  which is excessive.  This is the the most sure fire way to know if it's going by the valves or by the rings or both. If you have more than 10 to 12% leakdown with standard gap rings then IMHO it's time to freshen things up but this will tell you what needs the attention.

This is good info for those of us who don't know about leak down testing.

Thanks Randy!
