No, they work off of your low beam setting. Your high beam lead wire will be a dead wire. Im using the high beam setting for my led's. The HID's a Katrilionzillion times brighter then your high beams.

HEFE, here's what the guy sent me..

Michael,

The 450r kit is identical except the 450r stock switch is A/C and the light kit is DC. I do not sell it as the kit is more technical than the average guy is prepared for. If they want one, they would need to wire in their own switch. I think the stator may need to be upgraded as well."

you did tell him it is the YFZ450r, not the honda.. right?
I was assuming the electronics were similar to the old 450 and the 700 rappy, seems weird that Yammie would re-invent it

Yeah, I asked him. I sent him a link to the site and he read your post. He just called me and reassured me that he was talking of the yammie. He said you would have to fiddle with your switch or add a direct switch to the kit.

So is there any cutting or drilling required to get them to fit in the light housing on a 660? Sorry home sick with a killer cold and a bunch of meds so these things might have been mentioned before.
Title: Re: Plug N' Play HID's !!
Post by: Ranger on July 15, 2009, 12:55:43 PM
The only thing you should have to do with these kits is just mount the ballasts somewhere near the lights...That's all I had to do on my last truck, the bulbs just plugged right into the stock housings and the kit has an inline connector that uses the stock light harness.

Bummer. How bright are these things in the day? I ride in the woods a lot and keep the lights on so that others can still see me through the dust (Tahuya). I don't want anyone in the group doing a head check and then seeing spots.

Can he get the new digital slim ballasts kits? Like this kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200363170986&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT. If so, I would be in! I don't want the old style ballasts. The old style don't last as long or look as good as the new digital kits. If he can get them I would pay the difference for the slim kit... Thanks!

Those aren't plug-n-play, but go for it. If I could have found a plug-n-play set with a slim ballast that allowed both lights to work simultaneously, for $100 or less then I would have set it up. Like I said if somebody found a better deal then this, then spill the beans and let us in on it. The closest I found was a slim ballast non p-n-p that only let 1 light work at a time for $92 shipped.

Sorry but they are plug and play. Any kit will work if you get it for h6m bulbs. 75 shipped is the best deal I found for the slim kit. You just need to let him know you need a kit for h6m bulbs  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400061290015&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT The factory wiring harness will not like lighting the ballasts over time. Yamaha did not make the harness to handle the load the hid's put on it when they first light up.  IMO you need a hid relay harness to run a HID kit on any ATV. Here is the harness http://www.xtremehids.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_107&products_id=720&osCsid=f17869777625ead595cab76902a2b7f0. With a relay harness it will pull the power from the battery to run the kit not the factory harness. You can still uses you light switch to turn them on and the factory harness is only used to turn the relay on which will light your HID's up.  Here is the big old style ballasts kit for $50 shipped if you want to save more on a HID kit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HID-Xenon-Kit-9005-H6m-H3-6000K-9007-H4-5000K-880-881_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ65Q3a15Q7c66Q3a2Q7c39Q3a1Q7c293Q3a28Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem5d23d07400QQitemZ400032822272QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

My kit DID come with a relay setup....Has battery connectors and some kind of 2 pin molex that I'm guessing is for the headlight controls.

You will need it... That is if they are in business that long. I have had 5 sets of the old style myself in 4 years, there junk. Now I have the new style HID's in the head and fogs on my truck and Jeep. They old style will only last 8-18 months and will be a lot less with the vibration on a ATV. They came out with the digital slim kits for a reason.

Ranger's just sticking up for me, don't mind him he's just being a smartass. Either way they advertise as 5000 hrs (on the ones I have) I believe and 5 yr warranty.... so if they last a couple hundred hours I'd be happy I guess. Just an fyi, I've heard the same complaints on ALL hid's even the big/small, digital/analog, but I've heard way more good then the few bad on all. The big vs small might be an issue , but we are talking about a cigarette box vs a pack of orbit gum they both fit in your pocket.

PS, Its funny how some advertise a 6000k light as being 3 times brighter then a 6000k light. CRIPES!

I don't want the old style ballasts. The old style don't last as long or look as good as the new digital kits. If he can get them I would pay the difference for the slim kit... Thanks!

I think they come with a five year warranty....

Man,

Sucks that you knew about all this and sat back and watched while we were talking about it. Thanks for being the barer of bad news and making me into an ass. Your the man...

You're damn right. I'm coming for your other larm if miy HID's break gunny!

I say screw it man. For 85.00 it was worth the try in my mind.

 Diggs, your crazy, but I like you...

Just installed mine...Works perfect, still trying to find a good spot for the ballasts that don't require drilling into a major frame section...Have em bolted to the upper headlight bracket for now.

Survived the splash test, There was a lil more water than it looked like across the street and I was like "uh-oh" cause I didn't seal the dust covers yet (had to cut a LOT out to make room for the bulbs).

Gonna do the truck later, looks like rain now and it's gonna take me about 45 minutes just to take the grille and headlight assemblies apart.

Yes.dumbass it aint the first time i've done hids...I just didnt want too put too much pressure on the bulb as i put it through the hole...The hole aint that huge, I just cut around the 3 wires coming out

Ok, I got ya now. I just cut the oem wires by the dust cover, made a small slit, and jammed the new plug (instead of bulb) through. Show us a pic of your lights beotch.

Probably should've just taken the plug off the ballast haha, thought about it but it was wedged in pretty good...I didn't really hit the bulb too much, and I wiped it with a clean cloth before I locked it in...

Just got an email from the guy offering us the group buy deal....

Hey Mike,

Just wanted to educate your boy on the forum talking about the new slim ballast vs std ballast. Please let him know that the size has nothing to do with digital.  The ballasts I sent to everyone are the standard size and they are digital ballasts.

I also carry the slim ballasts and will glady offer those up for $110 shipped to anyone that prefers those over the standard.

I did not send anybody's kit with a relayed harness as most Raptor's will fire both lights without it. I will gladly provide one to anybody that needs it if there quad does not light both lights.

If someone just wants to buy a harness, I will sell it for $10 and that includes the shipping.

Jim

So that settles that haha...The slim ballast'd be nice for easier mounting options but they work just as well...When I do my valves I'll have the front plastics off and probably remount them to the radiator support.

Truck's done! The grille was a beeyutch to get off (the pins kept wanting to clip back in as I was moving down) but I found a good mounting spot that's behind a splash shield on the radiator support...

Little odd thing- the glass enclosure on my truck's kit had a solid bottom that would not slide back over the bulb, so I had to break it (after the bulb was in and away from anything critical) to get it out...Other than that, works perfect...I already pulled my DRL fuses so they will not come on during daytime.

That's the box type I got, also my ballasts did not have labels on them (fine with me, makes it "cleaner" looking)...Plus I did get a relay kit with my rappy's bulbs? Well I'll see how they hold up, good to have "just in case".

Just for reference, everyone is installing it with that guide bar DOWN right (the gray rod running parallel with the bulb)? I've heard you should do that so if it's get hot it doesn't bend down and hit the glass.

Just got back from a weeks vacation to find this GB deal on HIDs. A few questions if I may.

1) I see from the ebay ad that they draw 35 watts, is this the same a stock?

2) I also have the Trail Tech MR16 HIDs (flood & spot), will the stock stator handle both HID set-ups?

3) For those that have them installed, how did you find the projected beam pattern?
By that I mean was the light controled and directed properly. Much of the critizism I've read about retrofitting HID bulds (in autos anyway) is the poor control and dispersion of the light beam. Bright is great but if it's all over the place, how's that a benefit.

4) Can the lights be wired to allow this HID kit on LOW switch selection and then when selected to HIGH my other MR16 are turned on also (both HID set-ups on at the same time)?

5) How difficult or goofy is it to mount the larger ballasts or should a guy just get the small/slim style to begin with?

6) Will I be burning down the forest in front of me with both HID set-ups on at the same time?

7) Who do I contact to order these?

Thanx, Kirk

for the guys that have installed the lights, and 4guns guy if he sees this?

how secure should the ballasts be installed??? will vibration shorthen the life of the ballasts?? should i mount them in a way that the are bolted solid to the frame or is mounting the ballasts with one bolt to the provided bracket going to be sufficient?

back out to the garage with another cold bud light lime i go.... im going to figure the best place for you yet.... haha  (the instal is easy... its the figuring a good place to install the ballasts that is is going to kill me (or force me to get really drunk)

Are you turning the motor on then firing them up? The battery drains pretty quick with them on and when it did that on mine only one would stay on til I got it to recharge...
Title: Re: Plug N' Play HID's !!
Post by: Blair on July 25, 2009, 11:06:16 PM
well i got mine mounted tonight, i havent fired em up yet... couldnt find any alcohol (other than the beer i was drinking) to wipe the bulbs off with.  here is how i mounted the ballasts, the right one is mounted to the radiator mounting bolt.

i mounted the left one to the fuel tank mounting bolt.

i did run a couple of zipties around the bracket and the ballast to hopefully hold the ballasts to the bracket. i also ran a ziptie through the bottom mounting hole and ran it to the frame to hopefully hold it to the frame a little more securely.

hopefully this works... it seems like everything fits... ill see once i get the plastics back on.

what do you guys think???

Same thing happened to me. My battery charger would go from 97% charged to 60% by the time they power up completely. Then one shuts off or they do a techno trance effect and one stays on at or below 60% power. Only takes 10-20secs. Its definetly a motor "on" mod.
Title: Re: Plug N' Play HID's !!
Post by: Alkire193 on July 25, 2009, 11:57:20 PM
Blair, I like your idea. I honestly didnt think they would fit back there. And you've given me something to think about with the headers, I honestly dont believe ill have any problems because the headers dont generate enough heat to damage them unless the headers actually touch the cases, which they wont. And if worse comes to worse ill use some foil tape like is on the rear plastic by the exhaust to dissipate the heat across the area and stop them from heating up. Problem solved!

.....and if it gets really bad ill wrap my headers  :)
Title: Re: Plug N' Play HID's !!
Post by: Blair on July 26, 2009, 12:05:51 AM
alk after i posted that about the header i went out and looked where you put em... i think that would be an awesome place for em, i was honestly just too lazy to try to fab up a bracket to put em there (maybe this winter if i tear the quad down)

and now that i loked i dont think you would have an issue with heat.

as for where i put them it isnt the best place and the brackets had to be bent the right way to just make em fit... ill let you know how they work after my first ride (next weekend)

Just to let everyone know about HID. The initial start up requires 24k volts to ignite the bulbs. The ballasts are designed to shut down when they detect low voltage, so as not to burn up. The Raptor's electrical system is not that strong and some Raptors will have the symptoms that he desribed occur. The work around is to power up the ballasts through a relay, which pulls the power straight off the battery. This helps out with the start up and allows both lights to ignite more consistently.

It is funny when you read how people associate this common HID problem with cheap Chinese crap. The opposite is true because the ballast is actually working as designed. The cheap ballasts would not have an internal shut off with low voltage and would actually burn out much faster.

Anyway, just let anybody know that if they need a relay, get ahold of me and I will ship them one if they paypal me $10 to cover shipping and my cost on the relay. Thanks and enjoy. My paypal address is hondajimz@yahoo.com

thanks larmy.... now that i have put the extra zip ties (holding the ballast to the bracket, and the bracket to the frame they are in there damn solid)... i spent probably 45 mins to an hour with a ballast sticking it in various places on the front of my quad trying to find a good hole that it fit in.  those 2 spots seem to be the best without major fab work.  i think i may do what alkire is thinking if i tear down the bike this winter...

6k is a pretty damn good one...It was pouring rain earlier, almost zero visibility but my HIDs were lighting up the road markers and the box truck in front of me's DOT strips...

For Vehicles.

Blair,

Can you let the guys know I will still honor the pricing for the Raptor deal.

I also carry all the color temps for cars and trucks and you can choose your colors for the new group buy.

Thank you,

So what's goin on with this? Is the deal still on?

I didn't read the whole thread, but is this for the reg or slim ballast ones?

Anybody got any pics of their install? Like where the ballast mounted n stuff.

I might have to put the relay on mine, was trail riding yesterday and one kept going off...They both work fine when I first turn em on but I think they draw a lot of current or the ballast was getting knocked around pretty good on whoops and jumps.

I sent in the $5 for shipping the relay and got something that resembles the creatures from alien that come out of the pods. Anyone have an installation guide or access to one?

Already on its way to Cali for replacement. Great guy to deal with. Very great on replacement.

My fault, accidently got it caught during motor install and it broke through the case. He still covered it under warranty. Not bad eh? Needs the relay though

So is the relay required? I bought a set and have them at the house, but since I'm deployed I wont be able to install them till Jan. I want to make sure I have everything I need to install them when I get home.
Title: Re: Plug N' Play HID's !!

I would suggest getting the relay. Without it, at idle you'll get a bulb that flickers.

And these are only low beam. they don't over shine really. But honestly. riding @ night you don't need anything other than these.

I'm spacing the company. There's one that makes a mount that goes on your helmet. And it's HID. I'm having a brain fart and can't remember the name of the company that makes the bar mount HIDs. :help:

They are the same kit I got on mine, no high beam function but they are pretty fooking bright...I have them on my truck too and rarely use my high beams now...I am gonna mount some more HIDs on my handlebars like trailtechs and rig them to my high beam switch for spotlights

That's what I really want is those ones on frame. And one on the bars a thin slim one. So it turns with bars and some these hair pin curves.

The ones I am thinking about are self-contained units, no external ballasts that I saw needed...I think they are the TR16 model but I am not sure, too many #s to keep track of. The ones on my frame aren't huge but they're not like the slim ones.
