Silver Lake - Worth It?
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:32:15 AM »
I am located by Madison, Wisconsin and have decided I may want to drive over to Silver Lake Dunes this year.  The trails around here are all fine and fun, but I want to try the dunes.  My question is, is Silver Lake worth the seven hour drive?  I have heard some people talk about how small of an area it is, but is it enough to keep a person amused for a 2-3 day trip?  Also, I have heard weekends are terribly busy, would it be wise to take off a couple days during the week?

Thanks in advance!

I think it will me more then worth the drive to get some sand time.  Yes it is smaller then some of the big dunes out west, but fun non the less.  Krandall (one of the admins here) makes the 11 hour drive from MN.  And I make the drive from Chicago.  I'm sure some of the holiday weekends are bad but I didn't find it to be too busy on the weekends I've been there.  Also, I would highly recommend making the trip for our rally this year, its a good chance to meet some of the other members and a great time riding with fellow raptor owners.  Please check the link below for news and info on the upcoming raptor rally in June.

The holiday weekends are extermely busy, but most weekends could be described as "populated but not crowded".  Aside from a few holiday weekends I've never felt cramped or clausterphobic there.

As for the size yes it's small, but being closer to home than any other dunes sure does make it more appealing.  There is a lot there for the size and you can easily stay entertained for a few days.  I know quite a few people who spend 5-10 days straight up there every year.

I make an 8 hour drive about 3-4 times a year.  I always second guess the plans but I've never been sorry I went.

I am making a 7 1/2 hr drive there to ride with some people I haven't even met. Hope the dunes are cool, or it will just be weird.

But, riding dunes is fun as hell, especially if like jumping.
