UPDATE:

Ok folks here some details.

Accommodations:

Walden is dry camp, no power or water available.  There is public toilets at Several areas.  We will be camping on the north end in the trees.  We will make sure to get up there early enough to grab area for us to camp together (as much as possible anyway).  (If camping isn't your thing there are motels).
There is not much in the town of Walden itself, so pack groceries.  There are 3 main towns/cities you will go through to get to Walden.  If you come from the south, most likely you will go through Winter Park which has a safeway for food ~1.5 hours before you arrive at Walden.  If you come from the central/northern part of Colorado you most likely come through Ft. Collins which is a large city with plenty of stores with food (~2 hours from Walden), if you are coming from the north through Wyoming, Laraime is ~1.5 hours N. from Walden with lots of stores.

Locating us at the dunes:

I will create a sign at the only entrance with directions to our site for everyone to follow.  Most likely I will also create smaller signs to simply follow also. You can park wherever/however you want up there..no sites per say (and no fees)

Meals

I would like the meals from lunch on the 17th through breakfast on Sunday the 19th to be organized.  Personally, I prefer to have each camp have the responsibility for 1 meal, that way the same folks aren't always cooking/preparing and everyone gets more ride time.  MEALS DO NOT HAVE TO BE FANCY!  Just substance for the masses.  Let me know what you'd be interested in for a meal, and I'll keep track of it in this post.

Lunch 17th- Colorado700R
Dinner 17th- ???
Breakfast 18th- ???
Lunch 18th- ???
Dinner 18th- ???
Breakfast 19th- ???

Driving

The Sand dunes are north of Walden (~10 miles) and the VERY small town of Cowdrey on hwy 125.  The access rode is County Road 6e (CR6e), it will be just north of Cowdrey on the right. CR6e is ~8 miles long, it splits once prior to the dunes, stay right (I will have a RS rally sign at every major turn from 125 to the camp site).

If you are interested in riding along with another member, or following a member that has been to Walden before, let me know.

Can't wait to ride

North sand hills OHV area, aka Walden sand dunes, and Colorado for that matter, has adopted the 96db law that some other states have.  The only db metering devices that they have to test us with is the Type 2 tester that is accurate supposedly to + or - 2 db.  I have had my Barkers tested up in Walden 3 times.  The results were, 101, 99, and 98db.  I have been up there on non holiday weekends, and have not been checked so far.  Holiday weekends they came through every camp checking for spark arrestors, and OHV stickers.  I did have one of them ask me to be tested, and I asked the guy to see his metering device first.  Woulden't you know it, his calibration sticker was overdue.  I just simply said, "If your metering device is not calibrated and certified, there is no reason for you to test me".  The guy just walked away from me with no further issues.  Just wanted to give all of you the heads up on the bull$hit laws that are now in place here.  I highly doubt that it will be an issue on an off holiday weekend, but I would be pissed off if I drove all the way in from out of state only to be ticketed for something that I had no clue about.  Hope this helps.  Look forward to seing all of you there.  Here is a link to the new laws.  DD

The law affects everyone.  But as Jason stated, there isn't much for enforcement....and we have an insider 8)

Also I'm locking down these dates.

I'm gonna try and get Adam @ motoadventure to come up there with us.  There is no dyno on site, but I have no doubts that adam can square you away if your tune is off.

for those who want to do some dirt riding too, there are miles and miles of trails there as well, so bringing dirt tires along also isn't a bad idea.

I will post more details soon.

Here is one that I have had for awhile.  Pretty generic, but should give you a good idea.

http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/kfo/recreation_opportunities/ohv/north_sand_hills.html

Here is a video of what to expect if we were going up in August, in June when we go, all of the climbs here will be 5-20 foot cliffs to negoitate before you climb the hill.

So we just tell them our bikes are modified for Closed circuit courses, and put our spark arrestors on. If all else fails one of you guys can strip down and streak through the camps leading the park ranger on a high streak chase!

I find that it might end up at a few Rally's without my say.

What do you think? RAZR XP 900? Sticker price is bulls***, but maybe I can get one used later this year for 14 or 13.5. If I can stick it at your place for my Rally trips until I get back home that would be great!

I'm a FAR cry from a Polaris fan, but honestly that price doesn't seem too bad IMHO.  If the rumors are true that these things can hang with the turbo razrs and have an even better suspension system.....that's allot of upgrade $$$ not needed in comparison.

What are costs like? park entry and such? Did I read something about noise restriction? I am not sure how loud mine is with the big gun exhaust.

I plan to sleep in my enclosed trailer. What are others doing?

It's free to get in. There is 7 miles (depends on if you come into the entrance to the north from Laramie, WY which can be tricky with a larger trailer or the main entrance just outside Cowdry) of dirt road and gets pretty washboard as you get closer.  No water or electricity but there are two buildings for bathrooms one at main camp and another between the dunes. There is noise restrictions of 96 db but it's not a main weekend so BLM might not be up there.

My trailer is not huge, 8 1/2 by 14 so it goes thru drive thrus!

But I am fanicky about taking my truck down dirt and gravel roads, so for the Dodge the more pavement the better!

Alright, so looking like 70/30 right now that I'm going to make this. :woot:

I'll be looking at about 72' with the trailer, should we be planning on taking the south entrance in that case or would we be alright going through the north ? Post 1 said there's only 1 entrance, so I'm a bit confused sandeater, could you clarify ?

Any Camping fees at all ? Nevermind, just saw on post #1 (No)
DB requirements ? 98 ?
Sparkies are required I assume, do they need the forestry approval stamp ?
Any tabs required for out of state riders ?

Anything else you can think of off the dome ?

Camping fee's= None
DB= 96 (Don't let this scare you, I was in Walden of the 4th of July and they never even looked at any of us)
Sparkies are required (Never seen them check for the stamp)
Colorado now requires Out of state folks to get Colorado tags (Lame) $25.25  The new ones for 2011-2012 won't be available till march. I'll post up that info then.

I'll be looking at about 72' with the trailer, should we be planning on taking the south entrance in that case or would we be alright going through the north ? Post 1 said there's only 1 entrance, so I'm a bit confused sandeater, could you clarify ?

Here is a map I made real quick.  The north entrance isn't very well known but it is much shorter if you are coming from the north (Laramie, WY) to go this way than the main entrance.  It has two-three pretty tight turns so with a big toyhauler or trailer it is probably best to go in the main entrance.  I always go up through Laramie than the Poudre Canyon (Hwy 14 out of Ft Collins) since it is flat and not a canyon drive.

I marked the "To Walden or To Laramie", the main entrance, the north entrance, the main camp area, and the south camp area.  I love camping at the south camping area because you are right next to the dunes and inbetween them.  From the main camp area you have to take trails and a long "road" that is all whoops.  I've almost gotten into a couple of head on collisions taking those trails (on big weekends) so that is another reason why I camp at the south site.  However, there are a lot fewer sites to camp at compared to the main camp.

The north side (Laramie side) is smaller with what we call the "roller drag" (small hills that go up and down and if he go fast enough you can get your front end to lift off the top of the little hills while racing :)) and some decent hill climbs.  The south (bigger side) there is deadmans, the roots hillclimbs, flat drag area, and more open space so that is where more people hang out.

:bs: I was in Wy before I realized where the phuck I was  I'm sure Aaron or someone could rig up a sign or something letting everyone know where to turn.

LOL I know how ya feel.  I think I came within 1/2 mile of the white North Sand Hills "sign" if you want to call it that and felt like I missed the road and turned around to head back to Walden.  It took me a couple of hours to finally find the place.  I even ended up on some random farmer/rancher's property and asked them how to get there Lol.  I was only able to ride there for maybe a couple of hours and then turned around and went back home.  Wow that was 5 years ago!

If Aaron wants some help I am pretty sure him and I will definitely come up with some signs to help everyone out because it can be a tricky place to find and help guide to where everyone will be camping.

I drove into Walden from Laramie today.  Drove up to where you turn right to enter the dunes.  There is a $hitload of snow up in the trees surrounding the dunes.  Last year around this time, I could see sand in spots from hwy 125, and the snow run off left some nasty cliffs around the dunes.  This year, more snow, no visible sand, and probably even steeper cliffs in June.     Might want to think about a truck or side by side as an anchor point.  Mabye run a strap off the anchor vehicle with a hook on the end, to grab the quads before dropping 10 to 25 feet into the river.  We have had to do this before in 2008.

We could ask the BLM if it is okay.

I did a dune clean up a few years ago and posted signs for directions and nobody said anything about it but seems like things have changed up there since then so its always good to cover ourselves.

By June deadmans might be pretty tame especially if the rails get down in there and knock it down pretty good.  I remember driving by there in February or March a couple of years ago and you couldn't even get onto Road 6E or whatever it is from Hwy 125 because there was so much snow.

This is what it looked like that year in June:

Give Sandtoyz Unlimited a call!  Tell them you are on the forum.

818.500.7263

I got 21x8x12 bead to bead buffed (lightened) Skat Trak Extremes with Douglas 8x8 blue labels for around $350

If you are close to stock I wouldn't go over a 7 paddle hauler, preferable a 6 paddle.  Once you hit 60+ hp you will have to go up in paddles or go to extremes.  I started ripping my new haulers and went to extremes.  Do NOT run a 20" tire at Walden you will hate life.

huh!  I didn't update this.  I DID get a weeks vacation switched around.  I am in!

We had really bad weather a week ago, ice everywhere.  Read there was 100 wrecks in a 4 hour span then 1000 wrecks in a 24 hour span.  People at work calling in sick left and right.  Both freeways going north were shut down a little ways north.  Well I showed up and first thing asked a supervisor if he minded switching a week for me.  He whipped out the vacation book, looked it up, I signed the new week and he punched it in the computer on the spot.

If everything goes well, I hope to make it to Walden the first part of May.  If so, I will take some pics, post em up here.  With that much snow this year, "Somewhere between 125 and 150 inches this year so far,"  should be a nasty runoff.  I need to get out and ride

For sure! And the slightest miscalculation can have you and your quad stuck in a dead fall that is suspended above the ground.

Let's see... there is also "bear wrassling", "getting your oil checked", driving up trees, group night rides gone bad, and lot's more fun!

Hope I haven't scared anyone yet.

Lol it's the 00 model haha. The rappy won't be done by then. If it is that would be a miracle!!  Went over budget because I wasn't expecting to have to do engine repairs. And I took the money I was going to use for my new head and exhaust and bought something else that's expensive and round ;)

WOW....ok I am ready to move somewhere warmer!! :bs:  Usually I've been up to Walden at least 3 times by now.  I used to go up there early April and there might have been a little snow there but not much.  Seems like winters are getting longer  I need more riding time!

I'll try to make it up there guys.  I might just drive up and hang out even tho thats boring at Walden....even riding there can get boring after a while LOL  :D  Thats why I used to take $50+ of liquor up there every weekend but stopped drinking that stuff  ::)

I might take Aaron's quad for a rip to see what mine will be like when its done

Colorado out-of-state OHV registration Link. Cost = $25.25

https://parksstore.state.co.us/p-6-non-resident-ohv-permit.aspx

If you plan on riding into Wyoming you'll need the WY out-of-state registration here Cost= 15.00:

http://wyotrails.state.wy.us/ORV/Permits.asp

Wyoming registration is also available right on the WY border (on the trail from Walden) at the Wycolo Lodge (4039 Hwy 230 Laramie WY 82070  307-755-5160)

Just got a call from a few guys that were in Walden this weekend.  They said that the entire North side still had snow drifts that were impassable.  They said that the run off had not even started yet, "No river".  To all of you that are on the fence about making it to this rally, if there was ever a year to make it to Walden, this would be it for sure.  One more thing, bring all the extra parts you have that could possibly break durning a roll over.  Most everyone that I talked to broke something this weekend.  Can't wait.

Is everybody ganna be on a rapters or banshees?? Cuz those machines are kinda out of our league. Lol. Looks like a good thing you got going here though. It might be worth it just to come out, mess around and watch you guys.

Hey Guys! What's the deal with the food situation? Are we all going to fend for ourselves or do we have any volunteers for meals?

I was thinking about making a huge batch of Chili, it's not spicy but boy is it good! Then after dinner instead of sobe bombs you guys can have a farting contest over the fire and see who can make the best explosion or whatever entertains you!

Let me know guys so we can all be prepared, the rally is coming up in a couple weeks! Can't wait to see you guys!

I am having a hard time finding info on this, but try contacting this place:

USDA Forest Services Ranger Station
2468 Jackson St, Laramie, WY 82070-6535 (307) 745-2300 ‎ fs.fed.us

They might be able to get you more info in the Laramie area.

We are heading up Wednesday too. So far no updates except for Memorial Day weekend. Word is that it's dry for the most part but there was still some snow by Dead Man's.

The 7 day forecast shows mostly 70's throughout the week with only 20% precipitation on Thursday (T-storms). So I'm sure the snow will be melting if any is left at all.

We are not packed yet, we still have some maintenance to do on the quads (oil changes, air up and put paddles on), get Aaron's quad tuned and change some parts. I also need to make a big batch of chili soon. Get the 660 OHV tags, oil change on the truck. Oh and Aaron won't be back from Korea until the weekend. Also waiting on prizes to arrive for the drawings. I know I am forgetting some things, but yeah...we have a million things to do as well

I do feel better, I have to change the oil in 3 quads and the Rhino, register the old Warrior, put the paddles on all the quads, hopefully the paddles for the Rhino show up in time to get mounted on wheels. But I do have the trailer mostly ready, just need propane water and gas...

Head count is dropping, Aaron will be home tomorrow and can figure out the numbers.

Aaron can also answer the schedule of events, I know there is going to be a drawing (packages have been showing up all week).

And as far as I know Troy won't be attending.

The Rally is NOT canceled!!!! And never was.

We will be up there Wednesday. And there is still quite a few Colorado people attending.

Well it seems like everything I touched today turned to sh!t.  I was working on the toyhauler, trying to get it ready to go.  The generator isn't getting fuel and won't start.  When I turned on the water pump, the cold handle blew off the kitchen sink and shot a geyser of pink antifreeze all over the ceiling in the trailer.

We are headed there now. We will have a black and white checkered flag at the hwy 125 entrance to the dunes, there will also be a brown rusty sign that says sand dunes.

There will be small american flags to guide you to the camp area we are at. Then when you find the marine flag that is us.

There is a water fill up station in Walden for those with RV's. If heading north take a right at 4th street and back behind the high school by the baseball field you will see it.

Home now, had a great time. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and thanks for showing us around, albeit at the slightly slower pace of the mighty Warrior, and for showing us the cool tree shots, the drag strip and the damn apple pie/kill. Aaron, this was awesome and I am ready for next years rally, thanks again for organizing it. Lets start planning now!

Thanks again, Brad, Brandy, John, Lisa and Coach Sick
