Title: Colorado trip
Post by: preddy08 on July 28, 2008, 07:13:15 PM
Just got back from colorado and had a BLAST riding with Troywcc. You guys are deffinately a fun bunch of guys to ride with!! They would give you the shirt off there back, or should I say the paddles off there bike.

Troy let me try out his set of haulers to try and chase down a 804 raptor, and the bikes were pretty close. I had 21-11-8 8 paddles and stock swingarm, the 804 was 22-11-8 10 paddle with a +4 swingarm. It pretty much came down to the start. I will tell you right off the bat that I am a shitty drag racer and had no practice with Troy's paddles and racing at that altitude. Between Troy racing and I racing him, we came to the conclusion that my bike is a tad bit faster than the 804

I don't think Troy wanted to give my bike back though........LOL!!! Racing in the rough stuff was cake walk!

Troy, you da man. Thanks for the hospitolity!

Looked a bit rainy that weekend. I didnt get shit for pics, but oh well.

Congrats on the yes   You are a lucky man much like myself, I married WAY up.  I'm glad you guys came out, sorry the turn out sucked.  I totally knew those pics were on the way cause I deserve them.  It was a good time for sure and I had a blast playing on your bike, that suspension will eat ANYTHING in it's path.  As soon as I get this motor to cooperate with me, that will be my next step on my bike, your's felt like a caddy.

Here is a shitty pic of the track I hit up. I racked the SHIT out of my self on one of the doubles. My balls still hurt a bit. Thanks darkside, shitty thing is her ring cost as much as a used RZR

Its 10 bucks to ride there for the day. Right as you turn off of HWY 40 onto HWY 125, on you right hand side. Pretty fun for the day, but thats about it.

The drive back from Walden was interesting to say the least!! It was pitch dark out side (no moon) and we saw/about hit 12+ dears. That hour and half drive turned into 2+ hours. Not use to that shit comin from nebraska.

Hows "Scotty big bawls" doin after a night in the camper with you

I know what you're saying on the last trip.  Your bike runs very good with the way it's setup.  Just think of the killer top end you can gain with a Dynatek and a set of duals of your choice.  On the other hand, is it worth it?  It's plenty strong now.

I love the power band as it is now, and I am running out of things to do to it. So I think that I may add a custom dyna map and be done with it. I like the RE piston, but dont know if I want to spend the money when I already have a nice piston. I will probabally toss a set of rings in once a year and be done with it. Its already proven its self this year to be reliable so I better not start f'in with it. Although that hot rods +5 crank is lookin good. It would be nice to replace the crank bearings while doing that too. After seeing what happened to your bike the piece of mind would be worth it. I would have the crank reworked and trued to my build.

Yeah I shit myself when I felt how hammered that crank bearing was, no wonder I wasn't impressed with my throttle response, lol.

Other than it locking up is there anyother symptoms the bike gave you? Vibrations, knocks???? what happened to the motor, and why did it give?

Post by: Troy on July 28, 2008, 08:34:49 PM
Not a one, I rode it for awhile just putting around with the occassional bang through the gears and it felt fine.  We went to the hillclimbs and watched all the drunks doing crazy stuff and my bike cooled down during that period.  When I fired it back up and went back towards camp it died and didn't want to start cause the battery went dead.  When we pull started it I took off again and the throttle response was a little off, right after I noticed that it just made a high pitched noise and was all over but the crying :'(

I dont want to hear that! I'm sure that the compression is'nt helping, but could not have been the only reason.

Post by: Troy on July 28, 2008, 08:42:10 PM
I looked at my crank right before I put it back together and thought it was getting more discolored than it was the last time I did the topend.  I didn't worry too much about it though and put it back together.  John at Racer's Edge and Kenny both think it was just timing that it went out and the added compression just helped push it along.  Kenny had only heard of one other one that did that and I'm not sure I've heard of any either so I'm sure it's not a common problem at all.
Title: Re: Colorado trip
Post by: Troy on July 28, 2008, 08:44:50 PM
Also my motor has been rode hard since 06, it's been out every chance I could get to ride and it drag races and hill climbs most of that time without much of a break.  You said my quad has seen better days, it was the day before I bought it, lol.

I was talking to rocket facotry about a possible build and I told them that I wanted to keep it reliable as possible and they said that crank bearings are pretty rare. They said that that only happened to the wheelie kings, due to lack of oiling.

Title: Re: Colorado trip
Post by: Troy on July 28, 2008, 10:07:57 PM
Dude, I hope you're kidding about the wheelie king thing, my front end never hits the ground.  If that's the case I know how that happened.  If I ride 20 miles, my front tires signed on for about 2 of that.  So what is the answer to the oiling problem?  I cannot ride if I cannot wheelie, I might as well sell my bike.

Aj, I think me, you, and Preddy's bike are all within a bike or two now.  Kiel will smoke us because of weight and he can definitely ride well.  Kiel would beat the blue 804 without a doubt.  He told me he put a bike length on the Mooseknuckle 812 the last time they raced.  That goes to show you the discussions we have had about dyno numbers, they don't mean shit in the real world.  Not to take anything away from Kiel's bike, it runs like a scalded dog for sure.

I hear Jason is coming to Colorado next week with the Racer's Edge bike, I think that will be a very very hard bike to keep up with for anyone local.  In my opinion, the RE guys are now the ones to beat.  Don't take offense to that statement, it is only my humble opinion, but they have been kicking serious ass and taking names.

I never got over 210. The 450's that I ride with, there fans never run.

My fan usually doesn't run that often, and I'm usually drag racing or hill climbing all the time.  It's definitely off and on.  It could be worse, on a Predator if you even mention the word hot, the fan comes on.

True that. Predators fans are always running, but that is because they are set to turn on 20 degrees sooner.

That would make sense then, we have quite a few guys running them and it seems like if they run for a minute the fan is on.  It only gets annoying when they shut them off.

I did that on my turbo four stroke snowmobile.  Polaris had it setup to run at 150 degrees all the time and said they wouldn't warranty it if you went to a higher temperature.  I found a 180 degree thermostat at napa that fit a geo metro and threw it in.  It solved alot of problems the machine was having fouling plugs and having gas in the oil, so the oil levels were rising.  The people that went up to this thermostat were happy, the people that didn't are still taking their machines in trying to figure it out ???

Not sure if thats something you want to do on a performance motor that will be running in HOT weather.

I can't see a 10-15 degree bump hurting a Raptor that seems to run very cool, I think monitoring the fan operation will be the key to seeing if it's getting scary.

If I were to up the temp of the thermostat, I would put on a SPAL fan on that moves more CFM. Just incase thing got really hot fast.

Put that RE 14:1 piston in there, that extra compression should help keep things cozy and warm 8)
